The book is either an adult or teen book.
Historical fiction. World War II era.

In it, a soldier (Polish? Italian?) rescues a Jewish boy and takes him to Switzerland (?) while being chased by German soldiers.

A couple of maybes:

~ The soldier is supposed to take the boy and his father to Switzerland (?) but the father dies.
~ I think the father was a banker.
