Hallie | 36 comments I have read a lot of books/memoir oriented around the World War II period (the Book Thief freshman year, a memoir over the summer, the nightingale right now) and while I usually don't like history, if it's presented in a more story-like or tasteful way, it's interesting to me. However, I want to branch out into different time periods. I'm not a fan of nonfiction in that aspect, so does anyone have any recommendations for historical fiction or memoir books that aren't set during or around the time of World War II? Thanks!

Year of Wonders is set during the plague years in England- that could mix it up! I also would recommend The Help (mid 1900's in the American South), Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (post-9/11 New York), and Memoirs of a Geisha (not actually a memoir, it's fiction: it takes place during WWII but is set in Japan).
