Cold Shot (Chesapeake Valor, #1) by Dani Pettrey

In college, Griffin McCray and his three best friends had their lives planned out. Griffin and Luke Gallagher would join the Baltimore PD. Declan Gray would head to the FBI and Parker Mitchell would go on to graduate school as a crime scene analyst. But then Luke vanished before graduation and their world--and friendships--crumbled.

Now Griffin is a park ranger at Gettysburg, having left life as a SWAT-team sniper when a case went bad. The job is mostly quiet--until the day he captures two relic hunters uncovering skeletal remains near Little Round Top. Griffin just wants the case to go away, but charming forensic anthropologist Finley Scott determines that the body is modern--a young social justice lawyer missing since spring--and all evidence points to the work of an expert sniper. When FBI agent Declan Gray takes over the case, past and present collide. Griffin soon realizes he'll need to confront some of the darkest days of his life if he--and those he cares about--are going to escape a downward spiral of murder that crosses continents.

Just finished this on Thursday! WOW - fast paced action from start to finish. If you read Pettrey's Alaskan Courage series, you will enjoy this one just as much. I have invited Dani to join us mid-month for discussion but haven't heard back yet.

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 945 comments I absolutely loved this one! I may not be able to participate much because my sister has my copy and I won't be able to reference things much.

Hannah we won't start discussing until mid-month so hopefully you will have your copy back by then:)

That makes a big difference. Maybe your library has it!

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 945 comments Mardel had it on the $5 shelf yesterday and I was tempted!

Chantel (channylee07) | 357 comments I love this book too! I read it in. I think August and it was sooo good. Like every single book Dani Pettrey has written already!! She is definitely one of my all-time favorite suspense writers. LOL I to let my neighbor borrow my copy so I won't be able to re-read it, but I'm still remember everything so I'm looking forward to discussing it.

I definitely want to visit Chesapeake! It seems like a pretty nice place to go between reading this series and seeing the show Chesapeake Shores, it wanna take a road trip! We should definitely start a book tour club, lol!

message 9: by Marion (new)

Marion | 124 comments My library has this available, and I hope to have time to read it for the discussion!

message 10: by Jane (new)

Jane | 120 comments Chantel, Yes to the road trip!! You definitely should come visit someday! As much as I hate my hometown of Baltimore (love the history! hate the crime rate!), Maryland as a whole is a beautiful state. In less than an hour I can be in the excitement and political intrigue of Washington D. C. In three hours time I can be in the Maryland mountains or on the ocean beach, with beautiful countryside and tons of historical stops in between. The Chesapeake Bay is beautiful (especially from a sailboat!) and all the quaint old shore towns are lovely. (Plus Pennsylvania Amish country is just 1-2 hours north and all the rich history of Virginia is a short drive south.)

A book tour club sounds great! Instead of having a bookmobile like the library does, we could have a booktourmobile! We read, we ride, we visit, we eat chocolate! Of course we're gonna need a booktourairplane as well!

p. s. - I've never seen the show you mentioned. I'll have to check it out.

message 11: by Hannah (last edited Oct 04, 2016 06:26PM) (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 945 comments There's a little airport behind my house, so when you get the plane stop off and pick me up...

Yes, this book definitely made me want to go back and see more of Gettysburg...I sorta got the Cliffnotes version tour the day I went.

Jane: the Barnes and Noble in downtown Baltimore is one of my favorites in the nation...the old water tower one, you know?

message 12: by Jane (new)

Jane | 120 comments Hannah, You've got your own landing strip down there?!? Girl, we are definitely coming south to pick you up! (Oooh! Just think of all the cute ways we can decorate the sides of our booktourairplane and booktourmobile!)

I'm looking forward to reading this book, it sounds quite good! It's been on my kindle for awhile now. Hopefully I'll get to read it this month.

As kids we used to wish my mother would've just given us the Cliffnotes tour of Gettysburg! I've spent hours upon hours upon hours on those battlefields. (I'd actually appreciate it more now as an adult. I haven't been in probably 15-20 years.)

Yes! Very cool Barnes and Noble in the old power plant!

Cool quite literally when we were there. It was 95 degrees and the air was out in the hotel (the Springhill in the old bank.) The only available rooms were in hotels that had active bedbug problems, so my mom and I spent a good bit of time at B&N. Need to try Baltimore over again in better conditions...

Yes, I live near the county airport!

LOL!! Jane as usual you are always full of great ideas! I am so down for the book mobile tour. Yeah, Chesapeake Shores is on the Hallmark Channel, I think it's after a book series...I forget who the author is, but it's so good! Plus Jesse Metcalfe in it (I swoon) and it's really a good show about family. I just love it!

Chantel your idea is wonderful! I have a small county airport a mile from my house so you can stop and pick me up too! Jane you have all the right ideas LOL:) What could be better than reading, visiting with fellow book addicts, and eating chocolate (I might throw in a good cup of coffee, latte, or tea with that!).

Nice! You ladies know how to vacation!

message 17: by Jane (last edited Oct 05, 2016 06:15PM) (new)

Jane | 120 comments Woohoo!! This sounds fun! (And "yes" to the good beverages, Loraine, those are a necessity!) I might seriously have to come out of retirement and start a new business!!

I'm jealous of you ladies with the airports practically in your backyards. I loooove airplanes and airports!

Chantel, it's on Hallmark?? Where have I been?! Can't wait to check it out.

Hannah, I am laughing so hard. Newsflash -- I don't think the conditions get much better in Baltimore! I think it's as hot and humid up here in the summer as it was when I lived in Florida and Alabama. Didn't know we had a bedbug problem. That's great! They can add it to the tourism brochures -- "Come visit Baltimore! We've got bedbugs, shootings and stabbings. And if you're hardy enough to withstand all of that and you're willing to dodge the bullets, there's some GREAT historical sights and a really cool Barnes and Noble!"

And now I need to stop goofing off, and go read this book!! :)

Chantel (channylee07) | 357 comments Yes! you guys should check it out Chesapeake Shores it's really a great show. I seriously have it on my DVR, I watch it every week I just love it! I'm glad the Hallmark is having a lot of great original series on there Network.

I wish Cold Shot could be picked up as a network series too! Because... it's just amazing! And it doesn't hurt that a few of the guys have Irish accents (swoons). Lol,I guess you can tell who's my favorite already.

Chantel is it one of those shows that you can just start to watch or do you have to start or should you start with the first season/ 1st episode type of thing?

message 23: by Chantel (new)

Chantel (channylee07) | 357 comments Umm...It's nice to see the first episode but it's not completely necessary. Because the show catches you up so what is going on.

I think I came in around the third episode in and I felt like I didn't really miss a whole lot. But I do want to go back to see the beginning though.

But I believe this week they're playing the last episode of the season, but I do know how Hallmark plays reruns over and over again. So hopefully it's still enough time to catch up!

Plus Netflix has Cedar Cove on there, which I know is a original series on Hallmark, so hopefully they'll put Chesapeake Shores on there as well.

I definitely want to read the prequel! I love the Alaskan Courage Series, so pretty exciting! I think it's on sale right now too!

message 28: by Jane (new)

Jane | 120 comments First line "Fog wafted over the silent hilltop, dancing in eerie waves ..." Oh WHY, oh why didn't I have time to start this book yesterday when it was grey and misty outside??!! I REALLY want to read this book (hope it's not too scary for my tender sensibilities!). BUT today is a glorious early autumn day, the sun is shining, the breeze is brisk, the sky is blue perfection....... Perfect for reading a yummy romance novel or one of Hannah's sweet vintage gems!! ....... Oh decisions decisions!! {I might have to go with something sweet, to counterbalance the debate tonight!}

p. s. - Dana welcome to the book tour, we'll pick you up!! (Wouldn't it be fun, if we could really do that? Kind of like your local book club, on steroids!!)

Lol! That's so funny I do the same thing! Sometimes when a book is too intense I read an old favorite to kind of counterbalance the suspense that I feel to give myself a little "commercial break". But I love crime fiction and romantic suspence, the on edge shocking moments.

message 35: by Marion (new)

Marion | 124 comments Jane, thankfully my husband is a reader too so we both understand piles of clean laundry that aren't folded and dirty dishes in the sink take second (or third) place to reading LOL. Surprisingly though, the BSF homework doesn't take an unreasonable amount of time. It's actually refreshing to have my Bible reading plan broken down for me!

Ok, so I'm on Chapter 16 of Cold Shot. Was Finley a character in any of her other books? I feel like her backstory could fill another book! I'm assuming we'll learn more about each of the guys as the series progresses and I'll stop talking now to ensure no accidental spoilers.
