This thread is for any suggestions for books on a single team and/or season for discussion in December 2016. Previous suggestions that were not in a previous poll are fine.

Not specific suggestion but can we wait to see who wins World Series and then read book featuring winning team. Can be about any year.

That might be a challenge if a non-"traditional" team wins it like Washington or Toronto. Sure, if the Red Sox, Cubs or Mets do, there's plenty of material, but not so much for those two, or the Texas Rangers. Let's do that next month after we know who was the winner was.

Back to our regularly scheduled program...how about The 1967 Impossible Dream Red Sox: Pandemonium on the Field - four teams were in that race on the final weekend. And another source of heartbreak for my mom. I was six and was learning the sport but that didn't hit me until a few year later when I understood just what a pennant race was.

That is appropriate for what is going on now. Weren't the White Sox involved as well?

Yes...the four teams were the Red Sox, Twins, Tigers and White Sox

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 7420 comments I can actually make a couple of suggestions here
Up, Up, and Away The Kid, the Hawk, Rock, Vladi, Pedro, le Grand Orange, Youppi!, the Crazy Business of Baseball, and the Ill-fated but Unforgettable Montreal Expos by Jonah Keri . Up, Up, and Away: The Kid, the Hawk, Rock, Vladi, Pedro, le Grand Orange, Youppi!, the Crazy Business of Baseball, and the Ill-fated but Unforgettable Montreal Expos
and
1947 When All Hell Broke Loose In Baseball by Red Barber 1947: When All Hell Broke Loose in Baseball. Suggesting this one as it an intriguing title and I actually have it.

1947 of course was a great year, but I'm not familiar with the book. Is it good (read worthy)?

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 7420 comments To be honest I haven't read it yet. This will give me an excuse to dig it out of wherever I put it. I have way more books than I probably will get read in my lifetime but I still get more.

David Schau (davelibn) If Montreal had a real baseballl stadium and bankers who woukd help fhe franchise, they would still be playing. Candidate for expansion...with retractable roof?

That was one of the problems post-Bronfman. The guys who bought into the franchise did not want to put anymore money into it. When Loria bought a share of the team he actually did put more money in, and embarrassed the other owners into doing the same. They resented it and started spreading a lot of rumours about him. As well Claude Brochu, who ran the team, had a clause in his contract whereby he got a bonus each year that the team made a profit. Of course the best way to make a profit is run the team on the cheap.
