15.3. In honor of America's Independence Day (July 4th)...
A. Stars - Each star on the American flag stands for one of the 50 states in the nation...Read a book that has the name of a U.S. state in the title or in the author's name. Examples: Gods in Alabama, Washington Irving
AND
B. Stripes - Each of the 13 stripes on the American flag stands for one of the original 13 colonies: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island. Read a book set in one of those states.

OR
Read one book that fits both criteria.

REQUIRED: You must use different states for A and B.

Sorry, no - the entire state name has to be in the title/author name.

No problem. I found the book I'm going to use; I just wanted to clarify in case I should keep digging for something I liked better :D Thank you!

Deana (ablotial) | 276 comments Just to be clear -- for the one book option, the state in the title needs to be DIFFERENT from the state where the book is set?

So for instance, The Hotel New Hampshire, which is also set in New Hampshire, would not work?

that's correct - for either the one or two book options, you must use different states.

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Hi Sandy, I have a question for you. The book I am wanting to read for part 2 of this task is

Dirty Blonde

the description there doesn't really say but the next book which is Daddy's Girl refers to the character from Dirty Blonde being a law professor in Pennsylvania.

Here is also the link at fantastiction that tells more about Dirty Blonde. http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/s/l...

Will this work?

well, even the description for this one talks about the gritty streets of Philadelphia. It works!

Thanks!

Denise | 471 comments These don't really sound like my type of books, but my local library does have them. Just want to make sure they are OK in case I do the one-book option.

(author name Virginia, set in North Carolina)

Home Before Midnight by Virginia Kantra, set in North Carolina

or

Carolina Home by Virginia Kantra, Book One of a series of four, all set on a North Carolina island.

yes, that will work since GR lists "The Real Virginia Andrews" as an author. You'll need to explain the setting when you post, since the GR description doesn't mention it.

Setalpgninnpsekil | 51 comments Would The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories by Washington Irving work for both criteria? It is a collection of short stories, a few of which are set in England, but most are set in the 13 states listed. Rip Van Winkle and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, being the two most known and by far the longest in the book, are both set in New York.

If more than half the book is set in NY, it works.

Far from the Tree

It has two authors, one is Virginia DeBerry, and it appears to be about a road trip from New York to North Carolina.

It sounds from the description that the book is mostly set in NC, so that works fine.

Colorado Kid set in Maine?

Unfortunately, Maine was not one of the original 13 colonies, so this won't work.

I've read a few out of order, but now that I've gone back to the beginning it's evident that her personal situation changes over time and you may read a "spoiler" regarding her personal life if you read a later book before an earlier one. If you don't care about that, then go ahead and read out of order.

Also she does have a stand-alone book: 13½ by Nevada Barr

Presumably, you should be able to tell when you read the book - if it is set in Georgia (or another original colony - the description says Southeastern U.S.), just say so when you post.
