Hard to say, cause if you like one you kind of like them all but i'd have to pick The Old Bank House for the pairing of Lucy Marling and Sam Adams. They're so uniquely perfect for each other. He's so wealthy, and she's so in need of wealth — but she doesn't realize it, which makes her seem to deserve it (and him). And they're both so simple and earthy but also intelligent and kind. Despite their very very different backgrounds, Thirkell makes them seem so utterly well suited to each other.

Hi, Angela Thirkell picked up the Trollope settings and characters and wrote books about them set during the period from about World War I until the 1950s. She's kind of dotty and breathless, reading her is not like reading Trollope, but she grows on you. And it's interesting to see her visions of what the children of Glendora and the Duke for example would be like if they had to deal with rationing cards and no servants.
