Ove is a 59 and he is trying to buy a computer. The sales associate tries to see him an iPad but he wants a computer. Then he tried to sell him a Laptop. He wants a computer. The sales associate gets someone else to help Ove and then leaves for lunch. Ove is disgusted with them and leaves.

At home, Ove gets up early for his daily inspection of the complex he lives in, making sure no one is parked in guest parking for over 24 hours, making sure the garbage is sorted properly. He doesn’t seem to get along with the other tenants. He want video cameras installed but he doesn’t want the feeds on the internet.

Ove is getting some new neighbors and then can’t back up their trailer without hitting his house, flowerbed or mailbox. There is a pregnant woman yelling at her husband in the car. He finally gets the man out of his car and backs up the trailer for him. A couple of little girls knock on Ove’s door and bring him dinner from his new neighbors. Ove is frustrated with the new generation, they can’t drive, drink normal office and it is he let go from work?

A MAN CALLED OVE DOES NOT PAY A THREE-KRONOR SURCHARGE – Ove talks to his wife but she doesn’t answer. Over is very economical about anything and doesn’t not like to waste a kroner. He has road feud with a Mercedes on the way to the supermarket. He blocks a spot to allow another can in and takes the last spot, leaving none for the Mercedes. The other spot was his new neighbors. He has a coupon for 2 for 50 kroner and he wants 1 for 25. Finally, after much argument with the manager, he takes it 1 for 25. He tried to pay with a debit card but there is 3 kroner surcharge for purchases under 50 kroner. He gets the 2 for 50. He gets home and tells his wife (who had died) that he misses her.

His father loved engines and that is about all he talked about. They got along well and he enjoyed his father’s company. His father would get called by the Director at work to fix his cars. The director one came Ove’s father a first model saab. It was the first car the owned and Ove became a Saab man. When Ove was about 8, he would go with his father to the railway company. Once someone left a briefcase that contents spilled all over the place, Tom, a bully started gathering things up – finders keepers. We went to the office where his father worked and was trying to return the money for the time his father wasn’t going to work. The director asked in Ove wanted to work to keep the money. A MAN CALLED OVE DRILLS A HOLE FOR A HOOK – Ove is preparing to hang himself. He spreads out a tarp, drills a hole in the ceiling and then there are several knocks on the door. It is his nosey neighbors. They bring over cookies and want to borrow an Allen key and a ladder. After much grumbling, he gets them for the neighbors. When he gets back Rune’s wife is there and wants help with her radiator. It is one her husband had the association get against Ove’s better judgement. Rune is now sick with Alzheimer. Peter, the lanky one from next door wants to know about the marks on Ove’s floor. Rune’s wife mentions Ove’s wife and he has had enough, he slams the door in their faces, they leave. I loved the exchange between Ove and the sales associate in regards to buying a computer! What a way to hook the reader in!

Sad that Ove is forced into retirement. Obviously he'd prefer to keep busy working.

A MAN WHO WAS OVE AND A PAIR OF HIS FATHERS’S OLD FOOTPRINTS – At 16 after his father died, Ove worked the two weeks to work off the money his father was paid. He found he like the work and wasn’t really looking forward to going back to school. He was offered a job at the end of the two weeks. He took it. He did is work, didn’t talk much but was always willing to help when requested. His coworkers all liked him and most owned him except Tom, the man who was mad at Ove for turning in the wallet when he was 9. One day, Tom and Ove were the only ones in a room when money went missing. Ove didn’t take it and saw Tom take it. Ove said he didn’t take it but wouldn’t say Tom took it (he didn’t tell tales). Tom said Ove took it and had some witnesses come by to collaborate his story. They had no choice but to let Ove go but before he left, his boss offered the night job. He didn’t want to let a man go because he had principles. If it wasn’t for that day, he wouldn’t have met his wife.

He throws the rope away and puts the tarp and drill away in the shed. He heads over to Rune and Anita’s and announces that he is there to bleed the radiator. They are surprised but let him in.

THE MAN WHO WAS OVE AND A HOUSE THAT OVE BUILT – The council was trying to get Ove to sell his house. The neighborhood was moving to middle class and his house was going to be torn down and rebuilt. He refused to sell. He decided to remodel his house instead. He and his neighbor acknowledged each other but did talk. One day a man came by asking for a glass of water and ended up selling Ove an insurance policy. The neighbors didn’t like Ove, they started throwing rocks at his house. A bit later, he woke up and smelled smoke. He got up and found it was his neighbor’s house, he helped to get his grandchild out and was trying to stop the fire from spreading to his house but the firemen would let him and let his house burn down. He called the insurance agency and found the policy he had was bogus.

A MAN CALLED OVE AND A LANKY ONE WHO CAN’T OPEN A WINDOW WITHOUGH FALLING OFF A LADDER – Ove was up most of the night trying to find a way to kill himself. He got up early, saw Peter, the lanky one with his ladder and a dinner knife he was going to try and open the window. He saw Anita, she told him they wanted to take Rune away from her. The lady with the barking dog was smirking at him, he looked for the cat. He went to the shed, got a tube and went to the garage, he put the tube in the exhaust and started the engine. He heard a siren and ignored it. There was furious knocking on the door. It was the pregnant woman, she stood too close to the door and when Ove opened it, he got her in the nose. Standing there with a bloody nose, she told him he had to take her to the hospital, Peter had fallen off the ladder and she didn’t have a driver’s license. He didn’t want to but knew his wife would be angry if he bloody the pregnant woman’s nose and then left her there. She went to get her kids.

A MAN WHO WAS OVE AND ONE DAY HE HAD ENOUGH – The day after the fire the council came and said that they had been trying to reach him by mail. They were still willing to buy the land but as the price without a house. Ove was tired of being a doormat that people walked all over. He rented a room from a lady, he still worked at night cleaning the railway. One day he met Tom and his buddies, Tom started to call him a thief. Ove ignored him, took of his father’s watch and took a shower. When he got out, the watch was missing. Still naked, he walked into the room where Tom and his buddies were, told Tom to give back his watch. Tom laughed and jeered at him. Ove took Tom’s coat, found the watch and punched Tom. He ended up in the hospital but wouldn’t say what had happened. No one else seemed to see anything either. Ove quit his day job and was given a tool box. He helped around the house but was despondent. The lady he was living with sent him to a garage to work on his car. He took it apart, put it back together, bought a new one and did the same thing. Then he met his future wife and his life was never quiet again.

A MAN CALLED OVE AND A CLOWN CALLED BEPPO – Ove takes the pregnant woman and her kids to the hospital to see her husband. Ove didn’t think it was right for a hospital to charge for parking if you would most likely die there. As they got into the hospital, the pregnant woman left her kids with Ove so she couldn’t find out about her husband. The 3 year old so a clown and wasn’t to go it. The clown approached. It wanted money from Ove, he didn’t want to pay. When the pregnant woman came back there was security guards around them. They said that Ove hit the clown and wouldn’t let him leave to fill the parking meter and therefore got a ticket. The car smelled of exhaust and when they got home, the pregnant woman saw the tube and made up work for Ove to do. He wouldn’t have to wait until the next day to kill himself.

A MAN CALLED OVE AND A WOMAN ON THE TRAIN – Ove saw Sofie on the train platform going the opposite way from where he was going. He got on the train and sat in the compartment with her. He rode with her to school every day for three months, sleeping in the train station to wait for her to come home and rode home with her. After three months, she asked him to dinner. She asked what he wanted to do if he could do anything and he said build houses. She brought him brochures about school for that. She wanted to get married, he proposed. She wanted a house with kids, he bought a house. Forty years later, she was lying in a hospital bed telling him everything was going to be OK. She died with her hand in his. “He never lived before he met her. And not after either.”

A MAN CALLED OVE AND A DELAYED TRAIN – Ove set out early the next day, no neighbors were going to stop him this time. He went to the train station. He was going to wait until the last moment and jump on the train track. He didn’t want the conduction to see him. As he was waiting for the train, it was almost time, a man grabbed his chest and fell into the tracks. Ove followed him down and grabbed the man and push him up and off the track until some worker men could grab him. He was standing on the track and figured this would be the way he would go. The train was coming, he could feel it. Staring at the driver, who was just a young kid, Ove couldn’t do it and got off the track at the last minute. He was declared a hero but he complained about the rest of the trains being delayed. He left. He saw the weedy one as he saw Rune being taken away by the Social Services. She told him he was next. He went to the shed and found the cat at the bottom of the hole in the snow.

A MAN WHO WAS OVE AND A TRUCK IN THE FOREST – People always asked Sonja why she liked Ove. He was like her father. Her mother died in childbirth and her father raised her in the forest. She loved to read and he took her to the library so she wouldn’t have to read the newspaper at 5. There was an old cat, Earnest, she named after Hemmingway that adopted her father. Sonja brought Ove to meet her father – it was uncomfortable, she had to do all the talking. Finally, she kicked Ove to get him to talk, he asked about her father’s car. Sore subject. Then she kicked her father – he told how the car didn’t run well. Ove asked if he could take a look at it. They seemed to get a long after that.

She makes him let them into his house and yells at him to get a blanket and turn on the heat. He says no to the heat and get a blanket, by them Jimmy, his fat IT neighbor is there. He takes off his shirt and lays on the cat to warm him. Parvaneh goes to the kitchen to boil water and stops in her tracks. The kitchen is the same as when Sonja died. A MAN WAS OVE AND A CAT CALLLED ERNEST – Ove and Sonja’s father co-existed and well as he and Ernest. They were at the forest house when Sonja’s father died. She was devastated and didn’t get out of bed for 4 days. After six days, Ernest got hit, they took him to the vet, it was too late. Sonja had to say goodbye to both Ernest the cat and her father. They left the forest house and stopped somewhere in the first town. Ove stayed in the car while Sonja went it. When she came out, she announced that they should buy a house for their child to grow up in. He said they would have to get a Saab station wagon.

A MAN CALLED OVE AND A CAT THAT WAS BROKEN WHEN HE CAME – Ove has the cat Annoyance in his house. He is irritated when the cat tried to snuggle up to him when he is sleeping. He puts socks on the cat per the vet’s instructions and goes on his daily routine. He is not going to let the cat stay in the house so takes him along. The cat doesn’t want to stay on the newspaper as Ove wants and when he start to claw it – Ove slams on his break causing the cat the slid into the seat in front. He sits on the paper. When Ove goes into the florist shop for flowers, the cat likes the interior of the car. When they get to the cemetery, Ove get the cat out. They go to Sonja’s grave, he gives the flowers and says the cat was broken when he got it. Ove tells Sonja he misses her and the cat snuggles up to him.

A MAN WHO WAS OVE AND COUNTRIES WHERE THEY PLAY FOREIGN MUSIC IN RESTAURANTS – Ove and Sonja took a bus trip to Spain when they got married. As Sonja was pregnant, she took in the local custom on take siesta in the afternoons. Ove went for a walk at these times. Each day on his walk he would do something, one day he fixed Jose’s car, next help someone build a fence, next build a wall. Sonja said he was a strange superhero.
