9. Consider the role that animals play in the novel. Why does Coralie save the tortoise? What is the symbolism of the trout that Eddie cannot kill? In what other instances do animals reveal something about a character?

I have a very tender heart when it comes to animals. Coralie saving the turtle was very meaningful to me. With all the symbolism discussed about fire and cleansing and the people that had their personal deformities, doesn't the poor tortoise have his chance at survival as well. I felt that way with all the animals. Even Eddie's trout has a chance rather than becoming a lobster.
