I wanted to go ahead and start a thread to get the ball rolling on our book discussion. What did everyone think of the subtle knife? Especially in comparison to the first book? Can't wait to hear your thoughts!

I personally didn't like this book as much as the first one. In my opinion, the second book in a trilogy is often the best because the author doesn't have to introduce us to every character or build up a new world. They also don't have the pressure of bringing everything to a satisfying conclusion, they can take time expanding on the story. Unfortunately, Pullman doesn't give himself that luxury, and I think it hurts The Subtle Knife.I missed many of the characters that I had grown attached to. What happened to the gyptians and armored bears? Why was the protagonist relegated to a supporting character? Although I like Will well enough, it made me sad that Pullman changed the main character from female to male.
