Alex (asato) I'm looking for stories involving mobile apps and the supernatural. There's quite a bit in anime/manga about using phones to connect w/the supernatural world or summon superhero/supernatural beings. Ring is kind of like this idea, but it uses a videotape.

Disclaimer: I'm doing some research on this theme because I'm considering writing a short story like this.

J. Gowin It might help your research if you look up fetches. Fetches are a kind of doppelganger that acts as a death omen. Typically they are seen before the death, as a doubled reflection or standing at a grave. But they have also been known to appear to loved ones at the moment of death. (The most famous of this type include the "Tommies" whom appeared before family and friends at home, while they were acually dieing on one of the battlefields of the great war.) This has evolved into the phenomenon of missed calls at the time of death, which I think might be of interest to you.

Thx! Those are terms I didn't know.

Kylie (new-vogue-ravyn) | 113 comments Not with apps, but with a phone box, there's the urban legend known as "Help Me, Suzie's Dying" ( https://theghostinmymachine.wordpress... ) where if you call a particular number from a phone box you can hear a curious and disturbing message.

There were also a few stories on tumblr about the facial recognition software on their phones and cameras picking up 'faces' that weren't there. I remember them because they left a real impression on me but sadly I can't seem to find them now. If I come across anything else relevant I'll be sure to report back.

Good luck with your story!

Whoa! Totally cool. I'll do some research on urban legends. Psyren #01: Urban Legend, which uses a phone card, is more Sci-fi.

Kylie (new-vogue-ravyn) | 113 comments While we're on the subject, I assume that along with the Ring film, you've watched the original One Missed Call and the Korean film Phone? They are somewhat relevant to your subject too. There's also a pre-story short film based on Ju On called 444-444-4444, which you can see on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99JHlp... . It's always worth familiarizing yourself with the well-known stuff to ensure any references are intentional. :)

heh heh. you give me too much credit. i'm just starting out. i haven't watched any of them, but i'll check out your recommendations.

i read your post to my friends during lunch at work yesterday. they're into the walking dead. (they're actually my impetus for starting horror writing.) in response to "phones and cameras picking up 'faces' that weren't there," one said, "oh yea, that's creepy."

i picked up Loop from the library and requested Ring thru interlibrary loan.

you rock!

Kylie (new-vogue-ravyn) | 113 comments Thank you, you're too kind.

It would've been hell of a lot creepier if I'd found the original posts, one of them had a video (possibly staged, but still).

Loop is the third book of the Ring cycle if you're not aware. Spiral becomes more sci-fi than horror, and while I have Loop somewhere I have yet to read it so can't say how relevant it'll be for you - hope you enjoy it even if it's not.

I forgot about Pulse (Kairo) when I was posting about the films, that's mainly interaction via the web but it escalates if I remember correctly. There's also End Call which is Japanese too, but I wouldn't exactly recommend watching it as I thought it was awful. There's 976-EVIL as well, but I've not seen that. From the synopsis it sounds like something you might want to look into though. For another short film, try Cam Closer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwp4N...

News-wise, there's the story about a man's phone that kept calling his loved ones after he'd died (http://www.snopes.com/horrors/ghosts/...), and more tangentially, one about a stalker hacking a mobile and harrassing the owner (http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/story?id... not as relevant to you I know, but still pretty unsettling. And this list of supposed true stories of weird phone calls has a couple of ghost calls: http://paranormal.about.com/od/truegh...

I'm sorry, I have yet to find much else in the way of the written word outside of creepypasta (if you're feeling tolerant, or want to boost your writer's ego then maybe give it a trawl through lol), but there is an Anthony Horowitz short story called 'Phone Goes Dead' which might be relevant.
