This thread will be used to discuss the author Katherine Mansfield.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 373 comments Thank you Emily!

Being the keen type I am I thought I would do some background reading. I have just finished Katherine Mansfield A Biography by Jeffrey Meyers by Jeffrey Meyers.

I have read another biography of KM in the past, but whichever one it was it was a bit of a whitewash. This one certainly is honest enough to show KM's sexual freedom & that she was often unhappy & "difficult."

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 373 comments & the first story "At the Bay" is supposed to have been inspired by the Beauchamp family holiday home in Days Bay.

It was badly damaged by a storm in 2013 & was thought to be beyond repair.

But the property was sold and the home owner thought it was worth trying to preserve an important piece of NZ history - even though he wasn't a big Mansfield fan.

News clip about the rebuild. I'll call it that rather than restoration.
Two "journalists" at the end of the piece show the usual standards of news reporting over here. If it won't play outside of NZ let me know & I'll take the clip down.

I can't wait for publication.

I liked that bit about "a difficult period in her life!" Every period was difficult. The Meyers biography (which I recommend) had me close to tears.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 373 comments & anyone planning to visit Wellington should visit the childhood home that was restored.

I visited about 20 years ago with my daughter who was then eight. The custodian took such a lot of trouble with Chloe - showed her - yes!- The Dolls House & gave her a postcard of it. The whole thing has been beautifully done.

I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested. The Dreamstress is a sewing blogger in New Zealand and has done several photo sessions at the Katherine Mansfield house of her historical outfits. http://thedreamstress.com/?s=katherin...

Also, recently she did a two week "experiment" where she lived like it was 1916 (so about 5 years before our book selection was published). http://thedreamstress.com/tag/fortnig...

Thank you Charlene!

I don't know how I missed hearing there are Katherine Mansfield Gardens in Hamilton. I'll go next time I'm in Hamilton & it's a nice day. The Gardens themselves are beautiful.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 373 comments Emily posted about some unpublished MansfieLD works found in the States.

Some were also found in Wellington in 2013.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 373 comments I've just watched the first part of a documentary about Katherine Mansfield. I found it enormously interesting. (view spoiler) Also about three quarters of the way through there is a brief interview with Ida Baker.

Interesting to me as a New Zealander this doco was produced by one of NZ's most famous feminists, Sue Kedgely.

Yes we were there last Sunday. Once we found out that the Mansfield Gardens hadn't been finished, we should have gone to the Tudor Gardens that opened in 2015 - the picture on the placard looked beautiful. Oh well, next time. :)

My husband didn't, but my son gave me a book voucher & I used it to buy this book. Must have been a short print run as I had a lot of trouble getting hold of it!

I'm still reading her early poetry. Mansfield probably would have died of shame at the idea of these being published , but I'm finding them both interesting & accomplished for her age. I will be honest & say I'm longing to get on to her mature works.

& I was at the Katherine Mansfield Gardens earlier this year. Just stunning.

& this is in this mornings news. https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/ho...

It would be a crazy thing to do, but if I was a millionaire I would buy, restore & turn into an Airbnb. My husband & I had a look at what was available to view from the street last year.
