( M I C H IS A I T O )
seventeen, senior, baseball manager, heterosexual

Once upon a time, Michi had it all — she was one of the top high school softball players in the country, had a great travel ball team, and committed to her top choice during her sophomore year. It all ended junior year — it was only a meniscus tear, one that should have been fine if she had taken some time off, but it was during state finals — but instead, it got worse and worse, and a slide gone terribly wrong ensured that she wouldn't be playing again. It hurt. It hurt a lot, more than any physical wound. She didn't just lose her team, she lost her purpose in life, not to mention her ticket to college.

It would have been far too painful to help out with the softball team. She knew that. But when the captain of the baseball team suggested she become their new manager after their old one graduated, she took him up on the offer. The sting is still here. It is. But at least now she doesn't feel like she's just drifting without belonging.

seventeen, senior, swimmer, bisexual

Valerie (or, to her friends, simply Val) has always relied on her deeds to speak for her. It's a quiet sort of passion that she has, one shown through action rather than word; and she is unlikely to ever actually talk about the things causing her stress in life. She prefers to try to push through it without casting her burdens onto anyone else's back. Her distance from people and general seriousness is often mistaken for lack of caring or dislike or disinterest, and it would be a rare occasion for her to do something to correct it. At the same time, she makes her care for her friends known through the little things she'll do for them — a coffee on the morning of an exam, an extra water bottle always. (If you ever need anything, she probably has it in her backpack, somewhere underneath the first aid kit and sunscreen bottle.)

Being a Shephard has never been easy. Especially when you're Jackson Shepherd, the youngest of four boys. All of your brothers have been the greatest to walk Richard M. Nixon High, and Jack (he prefers Jack)? Well, let's just say he tripped on the way in freshman year. Jackson Shepherd, brother to THE Cameron, Matthew, and William Shepherd. Cam, the track-all-star who will be participating in this year's Olympics. Matt, the boy who got so close to perfect on the SAT's that Harvard was pretty much begging for the kid. And Will, the student body president that brought different flavors of pizza. And other stuff, but generations to come have been thankful of Will's decision.

But anyway, Jack has a lot to live up to. He always has. Everyone has always loved his brothers so much, he wants to be loved too. And that's why he plays. That, and he is also kind of addicted to sports at this point. His tv is never not playing something about sports. He's usually not wearing something from an athletic brand seriously just check his socks they're probably elites and he's usually talking about it. Jack mainly supports soccer and basketball, basketball being his actual baby and then soccer just something fun to do in the offseasons, but he likes most sports. He'll go to the football games and baseball games and cheer on his fellow jock buddies because they do the same. It's the way of life.

Thet way of life does not, however, consist of death and accidents. It involves parties and fun teenage nights, but not waking up the next morning to your peers in a drunken accident. Man that was a scare. But Jack was okay, which was good. He could still go to soccer practice and run the basketball captain's practices. But life was different now. Things felt weird, and not in a good way. And frankly, he doesn't think sports are going to solve this one. And that's kind of scary.

[ i ] t's only fair to give everyone a fighting chance, to allow them the same respect and kindness until they prove they don't deserve it. An innocent until proven guilty mindset. Mireille has done this her whole life — and no where has she been more disappointed than at RNHS. If not for her determination to not leave this place as a loser, if not for all the money her parents had spent getting her a spot in this exchange program... she would have left long ago. But Mir isn't a quitter, and she's not some whiny French brat either. The way some people make fun of her broken English (accented, but continually getting better) is just a spur in the side of her will. If their offhand, thoughtless comments hurt, if how lonely she feels sometimes grinds painfully against her heart... Well. That's for Mireille, and Mireille alone to know. This feeling of not belonging is something she wears behind a facade of contentment and happiness. Something she pushes away with the help of the few friends she's made.

Mireille feels like a lesser version of herself in English, a fraction of who she truly is. In French, she speaks fluently, easily, she's witty and quick, there are few hesitations and fewer mistakes. But English diminishes her. It's a good thing that Mir is, if nothing else, determined. She's a fighter — when others tell her she can't do something, it usually doesn't end in their favor. It's the same trait that brought her to the top of teen archery ranks back home, that got her invited to youth football — fine, soccer — camps meant to funnel into pros. So Mir still keeps a smile on her face and a kind word for most — no matter how tired she feels of pretending for so long.

anna wang | senior | jocks | volleyball captain | lesbian

anna was born the only child to a middle class family, her father being chinese and her mother american. she had a nice life, and from a young age she was very interested in all kinds of sports. growing up, she tried many. soccer. basketball. tennis. though once she was twelve, she joined her school’s volleyball team and fell in love with the sport.

in high school, she fit right in with the jocks. she kept up with school, doing fairly well. of course she didn’t get all perfect grades, though she was passing. she focused on volleyball, and when she was a senior, she was made the captain of the team. she’s extremely serious about the game, determined not to loose, and is on the track to get a volleyball scholarship once she graduates. still, she makes sure to have time for her social life, not wanting to be a total loner.

Emilia finds the world to be a hilarious place. She is always smiling, always laughing. She's infectious, the way she dances through life. She's the girl you always want to be around, who makes the world seem a less sorrowful place. She captivates every room she's in, through her beauty and grace. She will stand by your side your whole life, if you'll let her. And she'll make your life better just by being there.

Because why live in this world, if not to laugh at it? Why drown in everything wrong with the world when you could smile at everything right? Why worry about the problems of the past and future when you could enjoy the now? Why wish you could be with someone romantically when you know it can never be?

She's still working on that last one, but other than that, she's set. She's pretty happy with her life. She's got an amazing best friend, and she gets along surprisingly well with the majority of the jocks. Despite her not being overly skilled at most of the sports, she has dubbed herself the unofficial team cheerleader and goes to every single sporting event, even for the teams she doesn't play for. Because what she lacks in skill, she makes up for with team spirit and positivity. And that's what makes her such a good friend.

━━━━━ ᴊᴜsᴛ ᴋᴇᴇᴘ ʏᴏᴜʀ ʜᴇᴀᴅ ᴀʙᴏᴠᴇ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

DAVIDJULIANPRESCOTT; eighteen, senior, head jock
Captain of the football team, quarterback, head of the jocks, and arguably one of the most popular students, David Prescott is seen by many as one of Richard M. Nixon's most famed golden boys. He's guaranteed a million and one scholarships to the best schools, he has a dedicated clique right at his fingertips, and a family that supports him in nearly anything he pursues as long as it's a sport. Many would say that David has the perfect life.

Or at least that's what they said before the accident.

David didn't mean to get fucked up that night. He didn't mean to drink so quickly that he didn't feel it until halfway down the highway. He didn't mean to swerve off the road. He didn't mean to crash. But somehow, by some sick twist of fate, he did. In one night, he lost everything: feeling in both of his legs, all of his scholarships, his pride, and traded them all out for a T5 spinal cord injury and a wheelchair. The only things he has left, it seems, are his parents and his friends. And even then, half the time it feels like he doesn't have them either.

Yes, before the accident, David's life was perfect. But now he can't help but feel like it might have been better if he'd lost that too.

A L E X A N D R OS A N T I A G O ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

One would expect the captain of a varsity league champion team to be some charismatic little number. But Alex (and it is just Alex; only his mama calls him Alexandro) prefers to let his actions do the speaking. He is — to put it simply — a little gruff for an eighteen-year-old. But it's not that he's shy or apathetic — no, he's just quiet. Observant. His words are few but they are chosen carefully, and his team and his friends know that they have his support without him having to say it out loud.

He's a diligent worker; on the court, in school, with his friends. And that's a good thing. Alex has high standards for himself. He also, however, holds everyone else to those same standards. His team likes to joke that they're only league champs because Alex was a slave driver even before he became captain, but, well. No one ever got anywhere by sitting idly.

[ s ] ome call her cruel, some call her a bitch, and those that really know her have the good sense to keep their negative comments to themselves because, quite frankly, they're annoying. See, Mackenzie Adrienne Baak knows that she is an intimidating young woman ─ her imposing height of over six feet coupled with her resting bitch face only highlighting that little detail ─ and she really doesn't care a whole lot about what people think of her. After all, she isn't here to make friends; she's here to kick ass, get recognized, and make it big as a professional volleyball player.

[ f ] rom the moment she was born, Kenzie was thrust into a competitive lifestyle, one that revolved around her besting her brothers. It didn't start out with her coming out on top, though. That part took years of dedication and determination on Kenzie's part, two things that continue to push her today. Because the thing about Kenzie is that she isn't content with just besting her brothers; she wants to make it farther than most students at NHS will, farther than most people will. Because if you haven't guessed it, Mackenzie is extremely competitive and losing is not ─ and never will be ─ an option.

[ a ] nd perhaps not so surprising is the fact that Mackenzie is a very devoted friend, willing to go to great lengths to protect her loved ones. Like a momma bear, she will fight tooth and nail to keep her friends and family from harm ─ and she would literally fight. Again, Kenzie isn't one who backs down from a challenge; she rises to any and all occasions and she'll be damned the day that she loses her courage. After all, without her brazen bravery, she'd be too scared to make all these big dreams a reality ─ and like hell that's gonna happen.

They call him brooding, strong and silent, not understanding that he's not brooding, he's observing in silence. That he's silent because he's so awkward he can't carry on a conversation. That he's not strong for the sole purpose of being their eye candy, but instead to furthur his athletic ability. They call him tall, dark and handsome, not understanding how fucking racist (and weird) they sound. They call him an awful lot of things, and Devon learned quickly that almost none of them are true.

But, he also learned that they will continue to say them whether they're true or not, and in his time at RNHS he becomes more and more of the person they expect them to be. People bother him less, that way. And that's the way he prefers it.

The son of a fashion designer and an unknown man, Devon prefers to be alone. His mother spends her life surrounded by people and forever in the spotlight. He prefers the background, even though he knows he's expected to go far with soccer and bring his mother more fame and fortune. Everybody expects it of him. After all, he's damn good at it and absolutely terrifying on the field. No one stands in the way of him winning the game once he's out there. The problem is, he's not sure what the rules are off the field and how on earth he's supposed to win at games more complex than that of kicking the ball.

He has little to no experience in affairs of the heart, after all.
