Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 989 comments I'm hoping Kathleen might have some insight but if anyone else knows...

When I value books I look up sites like TradeMe/Amazon/Abebooks/Biblio. If nothing shows up I google.

I have a copy of Bears, Bears, Bears by Dorothy Butler. It .is in mint condition. In the past it has been on different Amazon sites around the world but nothing recent. & no prices still up.

I got $8 for an out of print Margaret Mahy that was in reasonable condition only. If you look up other Butler titles, the prices are all over the show. Dawn McMillan isn't working at the shop again till summer so I can't ask her.

No worries if no one has any idea!

Hard to Find list with Abebooks. Same with Jason's Books in Auckland. I've just checked both sellers' catalogues though - just in case.

Lesley | 1575 comments Hard to find are also in Auckland. I think their online catalogue covers most of what both shops hold, but not all.

Madhatters in Auckland specialise in children's books. I've often had success there. Not sure if they list on Abes but I came across them when using the secondhand database I usually use as it collects from Abe as well - http://used.addall.com/

Looking at addall it seems mostly the non-fiction Dorothy Butler wrote is around for secondhand purchase. Very few of her fiction works, and nothing for Bears, Bears, Bears.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 989 comments Thanks EG - I'll bookmark addall.

I can certainly try Mad Hatters. I've found what the secondhand book shops will offer me (since obviously they need to make money too) is often very small.

Butler books are hard to find and still popular.

And if you get any more Mahy, Carol, please, please could you let me know which as I am filling in my collection which has gaps from books never returned and my grandson is now 11 and likes Mahy. Thank you!

Yes, I will have to put the Butler aside until I can find out more. I now have a shelf in my bosses office for these things. We have so many older books that I don't have to rush putting them through.

PDR, Mahy rarely turns up & they have normally been her books for older children. A couple of titles I am looking for myself. Our copy of The Great White Man-Eating Shark A Cautionary Tale by Margaret Mahy has vanished. I was privileged to hear Mahy read that & I very much want to replace it.

I'll be in at the bookshop on Wednesday and will ask my boss. She picked up some DB books at an auction at the end of last year, so maybe she'll have some idea.

Kathleen Dixon (kiwikathleen) | 1479 comments Sorry Carol. I asked but it wasn't one of the books my boss purchased and she says she wouldn't like to hazard a guess.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 989 comments Thanks anyway. We are desperately short of books at the moment, but I have plenty of the more valuable books, so I'm not in a rush. I also have plenty of the mid 20th century hardback fiction that I love. Everything else has dried up. We have a massive book fair in our town in September, so people are donating to that. (that's all good - it's for charity too! :))
