Share your thoughts about the novel’s setting and the impression the author creates of rural India. What universal themes are there in The God of Small Things that transcend the specific time and place in which the story is set?

Rural India that holds on to its ancient ways creates the setting for a rich story. What themes are universal, family. Families are complicated no matter where you come from, everyone has a past and carries baggage. Change. Change is inevitable and change is hard whether you marry someone out of your culture, religion or caste system.
