Ammu is described as being "an unmixable mix. The infinite tenderness of motherhood and the reckless rage of a suicide bomber." How are these dual aspects of her personality evident throughout the story? Is Ammu a good mother? Why or why not?

Is Ammu a good mother is the million dollar question. I struggled with this throughout the book, along with a million other things. Ammu said and did some hurtful things but she did have moments of tenderness which would make me change my mind. She like many of the family members carried such baggage from the past that they projected it on the next generation. I had great periods of frustration while reading this book.

In thinking back, I probably did not think she was a very good mother but she might have been doing as good as she could.
