Devorah Fox (devorahfox) | 8 comments Welcome. This next hour brought to you by Devorah Fox, author of The Bewildering Adventures of King Bewilliam epic fantasy series.

I’m here at the invitation of Angela B. Chrysler, who’s launching Fire and Lies today.
This is my first Goodreads takeover so pardon any missteps.

Now, gather around the fire. Let me tell you a story.

The Bewildering Adventures of King Bewilliam epic fantasy series is a riches to rags saga of a medieval king who loses everything—sword, crown, castle, wealth, wife, children—and fights to gain it all back (and every dragon along the way). If you lost everything that defines you, who would you be? What would you do? Would you try to get it back, or start afresh? Is it a crisis, or an opportunity?

Devorah Fox (devorahfox) | 8 comments King Bewilliam stories are set in the Middle Ages, his kingdom the imaginary realm of the Chalklands. Which takes a lot of imagining from my perfectly modern home on the Texas Gulf Coast. When not writing epic fantasy stories, I run a small business, herd rescued tabby cats and keep my pet dragon, Inky, from torching the neighborhood.

Devorah Fox (devorahfox) | 8 comments Before he became estranged from his kingdom, King Bewilliam was a beloved and respected ruler.
Who would you be in a fantasy world?

I was "inspired" by the plight of people I know whose lives were derailed by some crisis or trauma not of their doing. I wanted to see if I could make that come out "happily ever after."

Devorah Fox (devorahfox) | 8 comments I am honored that earlier this year The Lost King was awarded the All Authors Certificate of Excellence.

This certificate recognizes the following values:
• Advocacy: At All Authors we believe in the advocacy of the Author’s Voice. There is richness in our tapestry that is well deserving of celebration!
• Authenticity: All Authors is not impressed with works that embody “same script, different casts”. We desire those gems that sparkle amidst the grass of the overly manufactured and mediocre.
• Creativity: There’s writing, and then there’s writing on fire—presenting material is such a way that you’re held hostage but never yearn for freedom. All Authors beam at books that not just hint at creativity but have that quality permeate each and every page.
• Exemplified: At All Authors, we want to honor works that serve as trailblazers to a particular genre or the transcendence of genres. Those works emphatically answer the query, “What first comes to mind?”

and it was with pride that I affixed the AACE badge to The Lost King book cover:

Book Four in the series, "The Redoubt" is a finalist in 50 Self-Published Books Worth Reading, 2016.

Devorah Fox (devorahfox) | 8 comments Much to my surprise, The Lost King was followed by Book Two, The King’s Ransom

book cover:

Initially I hadn’t planned beyond The Lost King but readers kept asking “When’s the next book?” and I realized that there was more story to tell.

KR book trailer:

Writing a sequel presents some challenges.

In some series, the main character can grow and changes from book to book. In others, the main character remains more or less the same but meets different challenges or has new adventures. Which type of series do you like and why?

Devorah Fox (devorahfox) | 8 comments I’ve had a great time with you today but it doesn’t’ have to end. Let’s keep in touch:

The flames of my campfire are dwindling. My magic powers are fading. It must be time to release my hypnotic spell over you and release control of Goodreads. Thank you, Angela B. Chrysler, for the opportunity. I’ve had so much fun and I hope you all did too.
