Lou | 1 comments I think I read this book in paperback at some point between 2000 and 2010. If any of the below sounds familiar please shout up. It could be I’m mixing more than one book in my memory, but hopefully this is about right…

Set in 1850s America (maybe!)

A young woman (possibly called Amelia) begins a relationship with a preacher, he dies before they marry. She is left with his orphaned daughter and an unborn child. To avoid being shunned the heroine pretends to be widowed and that the young girl is her own daughter, together they join a wagon train to set off in search of a fresh start. Enroute she falls for a man whom assists and protects her along the difficult journey. She works hard and her hands become calloused and unladylike from the manual labour required to make the journey. The man admires her figure while she baths in a river and glimpses at her rounding tummy. After the journey is complete somehow they separate and a letter from one to the other is not received leading them to continue with their unconnected lives. Years later they meet again; he is married, she owns a casino and always hides her calloused hands in gloves. They finally get together although I think the heroine settles to be his mistress.

I do hope somebody can help with this. It's been driving me mad!
