Amy Pappas I've read this novel close to 10 times, discovering little gems and secrets with each reading.
I have NEVER been able to figure out Pinchy's mysterious "coming through." What does it mean? She causes trouble with the men servants during it, and afterwards is back to her own self.
It's not pregnancy. I've heard some wonder if it was a religious awakening. I've never heard the term before.
Any thoughts?

Virginia Pulver I read a few literary commentaries and the main thrust is that "coming through" alludes to getting through pregnancy. People did not generally make direct references to pregnancy back then. It would be indiscreet. This is a euphemism and is also used relating to a couple of the 6 various pregnant characters mentioned in the novel.
