Ok ladies so excited! Kerry I thought of you because I know how you love nonfiction. Anastasia and Kerry let us know when you can get the book. I'd like to start at least by next week.

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments I believe there's a copy somewhere in my house. I'll look

Yayy will we can start asap

Kerry Casey (caseykerry) I own it :) (and bless thanks Kish) xx ready whenever u guys are

Kerry Casey (caseykerry) btw i know there are about 3 movie versions..did you (Kisha) watch the most recent? I have not yet seen it all but it is on netflix. Also FYI...The diary of Ann Frank has 2 versions (shock horror) as one was noted as 'pornographic' although it is NOT pornographic, (what was labled as such was journal entries about adolecent puberty and sexual thoughts that acompany it)But I'd be interested to see if anyone has a copy of the 'unedited' version (hard to find)

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments That makes me mad, people shouldn't edit books like that >:-(

I seen the one that's on netflix. Not sure which version it is and Anastasia I share your sentiments on editing.

Kerry Casey (caseykerry) oh beleive me this book has its controversies (i started a discussion months back in our controversial/banned group) This will be a great read. let me know when we are good to go :)

I think we're good to go now. Sounds like everyone's ready. I can't wait!

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments This kind of reminds me of the Dear America series. Maybe this is where Scholastic got the idea?

This girls diary is weighing so heavy on me, especially already knowing how it ends. It's so sad. She seemed lonely but her strength and perseverance at such a young age is remarkable.

Kisha, I'm beginning to feel the same.

Kerry Casey (caseykerry) Anastasia: I only heard about the 'Dear America' series about 2 weeks ago (I found them on GR..I'm not from here so of course I'm behind but they seem really good aparantly American students get taught the series in school?)It would be interesting to see the relation.
Kisha: Oh man, yeh it's heavy. It's hopeful and sad and so simply smart and beautiful in many aspects (personal opinion) I first read this last yr at 29 and i related so wholeheartedly to her inner being.

Hows everyone finding it to read? (easy style? boring? annoying? enjoyable? a page turner?)

Lulu" cool quote right :) "Paper has more patience than people."

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments @kerry I've heard they are taught in some schools. I used to go to the library and check them out by the boatloads.

It's an easy read thus far but I'm not too impressed. I'm not sure what I was expecting but a story about how everyone thinks Anne is annoying wasn't it.

I think I'm reading the unedited version. It has some passages where Anne went back (like a year or two later) in and clarified some of things she had written, or how she was so childish. It's quite interesting.

I'm still early on in the book (page 84), but it's interesting to me that The Shabbat hasn't been mentioned yet.

I am interested in this book. And I do agree with Anastasia that it is far from what I thought I'd be reading. I didn't know it would LITERALLY be the DIARY of Anne Frank lol. She is a bit whinny and complains a lot. However, she is 13 years old. Ahh the teenage years! Every teen thinks their life sucks and no one understands them and they are so alone in the world and blah blah blah. But THIS specific teenager had every reason to feel that way!!! I will admit I'm having to keep my focus of her trivial miseries and focus on the real one. Her current situation. Living life in a room never being able to feel fresh air or walk down the street. Never being able to speak to her school friends and such. I couldn't imagine. And the worst is not even knowing she's quickly approaching death.
It is hard to read as I'm not very interested in the personal thoughts of a teenager. But for some reason this peculiar child has peaked my interest.

Kerry Casey (caseykerry) I think perhaps the fact that we all know Anne died very soon after her diary was found, could be over shadowing the simplicity and honesty of the story itself.
(Eg: okay when are you going to feel hungry, when are you going to want to die from cabin fever, when will you actually die?)
I agree Anne IS a bit whiny (bless her) but I (as Kisha said) understand that the begining of the diary is her innocent years. she grew up very fast in the 2 yrs while in the secret annex. Throughout the book she will continue to refer to certain trivial happenings in the annex..but think about it..wouldn't you?

I can understand in such a way that it shocked me. Her words are often of a wisdon, i would not expect from a 13 yr old girl.

Just remember that her dying isn't the goal along this journey. (Does everyone know she does not die in the annex?)

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments Yep I know. Maybe it's the fact we know she all dies and her diary is so.....ordinary, in the sense that she's a young girl who writes like a young girl (not ordinary in the circumstances).

"I'm no longer the baby and spoiled little darling whose every deed can be laughed at. I have my own ideas, plans and ideals, but am unable to articulate them yet."

"Don't condemn me, but think of me as a person who sometimes reaches the bursting point!"

We can see how Anne has matured and grown. You gotta think...it had to be hard to become a teenager in this type of living situation in constant fear.

Kerry Casey (caseykerry) absolutely. she has a very awkward, tender, amazing spirit about her.
there are some wonderful quotes in this book.

Where is everyone at in this book?
What do you think about the Van Daan's?

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments Just finished.

I don't like them, although I suppose circumstances like these bring out the worst in people. Maybe they were more pleasant when they were free.

Kerry Casey (caseykerry) I agree with Anastacia. They are odd ones but i think for a reason

message 38: by Lee (new) - added it

Lee | 708 comments I've seen 2 versions (1959 & 1980). I loved the 1980 version. I started the 2009 version, but couldn't finish it. lol..

Mrs. Van Daan is interesting to me. She's almost arrogant and extremely prideful.

I don't like how selfish the Van Daans and Dussel is. It's almost sickening.

Very sickening. I definitely agree. The way she pestors Mrs. Frank about how they raise their daughters is rediculous. That really bothers me.

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments I'd like to smack Dussel. Of all the people in the Secret Annexe he should be the least troublesome. If it wasn't for them going out of their way he'd probably have been carted off to a camp a lot earlier.

This book was so touching. Anne was so mature and in tune with herself for her age. I loved how we watched her grow over time.

The entire time reading I'm thinking Dussel gonna get them caught. Lol

Kerry Casey (caseykerry) Lulu wrote: "I don't like how selfish the Van Daans and Dussel is. It's almost sickening."

I feel u on that Lulu. (wish i had the unedited version) I agree it's a very touching book. Did any of you see the film 'Freedom writers' it has the woman who helped the Franks in it (as obvioulsy an old lady who plays herself)
