Gea (gea89) | 1480 comments Standard WOBBLE rules

◈ Books must be started after the start date of the challenge to count towards the challenge
◈ Books must be />100 pages.
◈ Audio books are allowed. (For page numbers, use the "default" GR book page numbers.)
◈ No graphic novels. (Sorry.)
◈ Boxed sets are not considered as "one book" and need to be shelved as separate books.
◈ No little children's books less than 25,000 words.ArBookFind is a great site to double check. If in doubt, ask your captain.
◈ Any genre counts.
◈ Any book in any language will count, as long as it meets the criteria.
◈ "Re-reads" will be allowed, if it has been six months since you have read the book. This includes listening to the audio version, if you've already read the book.

Gea (gea89) | 1480 comments BATTLESHIP RULES (in short)

- We'll be making 10 guesses on Mondays and Fridays - 16th, 20th, 24th and 27th
- We'll need to read 2 books for each task to call it done and collect points for it.
- Books for same task/square need to be read by different teammember.
- All books read during battleship can be used for tasks. Book once used can't be used for another task. There is no moving books around (in official spreadsheet) to better fit.

POINTS:
- hit (square with ship) = 5 points
- pages of read edition
<199 = 1 point
200-299 = 2 points
300-399 = 3 points
400-499 = 4 points
500-599 = 5 points
600-699 = 6 points
700-799 = 7 points
800-899 = 8 points
900-999 = 9 points
>1000 = 10 points
- sank ships
battleship = 5 points
cruiser = 4 points
frigate = 3 points
minesweeper = 2 points
submarine = 1 point
- bonus points - 1 point per book
- after task for hit square is done (2 books read), members that weren't
reading that task can read book to collect extra points (page numbers
still count). Maximum is 8 bonus points per hit.
- miss squares get only page number points

ADDITIONAL RULES
- in all tasks edition that was read needs to be used
- for genre tasks, book needs to be tagged (shelved) at least by 10 people. It can be subcategory or part of the shelf (for example, science fiction fantasy works for both SF and fantasy)
- in author tasks, if book has multiple authors, any author can be used
- only authors in author tasks can be used. No narrators, translators, forward, illustrators, etc. can be used.
- for name list tasks, it has to be name on the list (no Jamie for James, etc.). Gender isn't important. Only author's first name count.
- no boxed sets, bundles, omnibuses, 2-in-1 or similar can be used. If parts 'exist' separately on GR, they need to be used as such.

Gea (gea89) | 1480 comments Hello team :)

I come from Slovenia and am 26 years old. I'm currently looking for my first job so I have plenty of time on my hands and I spend a lot of it reading. I finished my bachelor's degree in economics and am hoping to find a job in that field.

I love reading romance books, mostly new adult, contemporary romance, historical and paranormal romance. I'm not a big fan of pure fantasy or non-fiction, but I occassionally read a good mystery or historical fiction if the mood strikes.

I already sent everyone friend requests and am looking forward to getting to know you in the next couple of months :)

Hi Team. I'm from India.

I am a Civil Engineer and a mother of 2 sons aged 4 and 1.

I read romances mostly but am open to new genres.

My other hobbies include crocheting and drawing

Sarah Moore (asomedayrelic) | 79 comments Hello! Wow, a bachelor's degree in economics is amazing! I'm an accounting major so I've had to take several economics classes and I always dread them lol

I am from the United States, and I'm 21 years old. I work Friday-Sunday only so most of my reading takes place Monday-Thursday. I mainly read young adult science fiction and fantasy. I'm not usually a fan of any realistic fiction or nonfiction but I do pick up the occasional book in those genres.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all :)

message 15: by Emily (new)

Emily | 440 comments Poongothai, so nice to see another engineer!

I'm an American, but I've been living in the UK for nearly 2 years. I'm a mechanical engineer, working from home. In addition to reading, I love to travel and play board games. (I'm starting to feel like I'm filling out an online dating profile)

I split my reading mostly between YA and non-fiction (history, biography, pop science). I'm open to anything except horror - although my book club picked that for next month so you may see me read it.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all.

message 16: by Gea (new)

Gea (gea89) | 1480 comments Sarah, we don't have majors here in Slovenia, we just pick between 6-8 different branches of economics we wish to study in our second year and then we "major" in that. I was interested in accounting and then went with international trade but still had all of the general economics subjects to study (in all three years that was over 20 subjects).

It does kind of feel that way, doesn't it? :D Your reading is opposite of mine but I'll watch your books if anything looks good enough to try :)

Sunshine✰✰✰ | 314 comments Hi Team!

I live in beautiful Vermont, USA. I'm in Accounting but still working on my degree.

I'm known to read a bit of everything but my favorites are Zombies/Apocalypse and Paranormal (though I'm getting board of vampires) My least favorite is YA, especially if there's any hint of Romance.

Trinia | 2091 comments Hey team! I'm a mom living in Texas. I work off and on as an Occupational Therapist at local nursing homes . So that affords me free time to read. My 2 sons are 14,14 and 13. So I often read books with them. Lots of YA, Science fiction, fantasy . Also woman's lit, romance and contemporary. I read anything!
Can't wait to hear more about everyone ! In a conference today so I'll be in and out!

message 21: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1668 comments Oh wow, we are really all over the globe, aren't we? I'm Camilla from Finland, I currently work as a school psychologist. I read many genres, although favor horror, scifi, fantasy, thrillers, YA and some parts of nonfiction. I don't do western, poems, erotica, plays and usually avoid pure romance.
I'm actually leaving with my older daughter to New York this Friday, we'll be travelling for two weeks, so I might get a bit less reading done than usually. I will have an iPad with me, so I'll try to check in daily.

message 22: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 1838 comments Hi everyone! I'm in North Carolina, USA and retired from a career in IT management. I have three grown children but no grandchildren. Since I've been retired, I have more time for reading and am loving that! I will read almost any genre but favorites are mystery and fantasy. I also enjoy knitting and crocheting and watching sports, baseball and football especially.

Hello, Polar Bears! I'm envious of you all, as I LOVE Polar Bears. When I was a small child, my family went to Sea World and the gift shop there had a giant stuffed Polar Bear. It was at least three feet tall and just huge. I desperately wanted it, but it was rather expensive and my parents said no.

That was over 35 years ago now, and I still have not forgiven my parents for saying no. lol!!!

Anyway, have fun with this W.O.B.B.L.E. challenge and good luck to you all from Team Burning Firebirds! Happy Reading! :-)

I'm so glad. :-) I was really happy to find it when I was looking for a gif to say "hi all!" in my own team thread. Even though we are Firebirds that presumably don't like water, and mythological to boot, lol. ;-)

And I really love your team image. Mama Polar Bear with Triplets! How cool is that? :-)

Gea (gea89) | 1480 comments Is anyone interested in a mini challenge before WOBBLE starts next week?

I would ask you to post links to your shelves intended for this challenge so there's an overiview. Once the important links are available, I will post them in the first posts of this thread, so you will all be able to access them quickly.

8 of our members are still to come by and say hi but there is still plenty of time for that.

message 45: by Gea (new)

Gea (gea89) | 1480 comments I've been a bit busy yesterday as we have decided to remodel our kitchen and we've spent better part of our day in different stores trying to get some plans. It's really annoying how one retailor tried to give us something we specifically said we didn't want but they still tried to sneakily include it in the package.

Everything was supposed to be ready yesterday but when I asked for a list of components they used in the plan they said they would email it immediately and there's still nothing in my email. My mom went to them alone last time and said what she wanted and he promised he would do it, but obviously thought he could bring her around with nice words and false promises. When it was time to show us what he got, there's nothing yet as he probably got something different. This same store tried to sell my cousin used washing mashine as a new one and with a "great discount" as it was the last one they had. Later she found out that mashine has been out of sale for over 6 years and god knows where they found it and tried to sell it off to the first unsuspecting customer that came by.

Let's try with answering some general questions that will give us better knowledge of each other
1. What are 5 of your all-time favorite books?
2. What kind of challenges do you prefer?
3. What's your favorite movie/tv series?
4. Which was your favorite book when you were a child/teenager?
5. Do you prefer e-books or "normal" ones?

message 46: by Emily (last edited Jun 11, 2016 04:09AM) (new)

Emily | 440 comments Gea, that sounds like a busy, stressful day. I hope your Saturday is more peaceful.

1. What are 5 of your all-time favorite books?
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic - and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World by Steven Johnson
The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri
The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Millard
Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach

2. What kind of challenges do you prefer?
I prefer challenges that encourage me to read authors from a variety of countries and backgrounds or genres outside my usual picks. I also like when there is some incentive to read longer books, otherwise all the 500+ page books just keep accumulating on my TBR not getting read.
While this is my first team challenge, I expect that encouragement from my teammates will help me to read more and be really fun.

3. What's your favorite movie/tv series?
My favorite TV series is Gilmore Girls. I like TV much more than movies.

4. Which was your favorite book when you were a child/teenager?
Harry Potter were the first books I really loved and they are still some of my favorites. The Dark Tower series by Stephen King (first book The Gunslinger) were favorites of mine in high school.

5. Do you prefer e-books or "normal" ones?
I still haven't gotten an e-reader. I imagine that one day I will, but I just enjoy the experience of reading a "real" book. Each book is a different experience - the size, the shape, the font, the color. Seeing the cover of the version I read will bring back memories years later.
I love audiobooks though!

message 47: by Charlie (last edited Jun 11, 2016 02:33AM) (new)

Charlie (meprincessyoupeasant) | 126 comments Hi everyone!

I'm Charlie from the Netherlands and I'm 18 years old, currently in my freshman year of college with a Law major. My favourite things to do are reading, singing, dancing, watching tv shows and studying (sounds weird, I know!). I read almost anything. I read YA, NA and adult. My favourite genres are contemporary and historical fiction. But I do read fantasy a lot too.

This is the link to my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

1. What are 5 of your all-time favorite books?
Night Film, Illuminae, Stolen: A Letter to My Captor, We Were Liars and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.

2. What kind of challenges do you prefer?
Not sure, actually. I think I'm really looking forward to Emerge the Victor for this one, but I normally like being given a challenge to read a certain kind of book. Example: Read a romance book with a POC main character. Don't really dig the spell-it-out challenges, but I don't care. Reading is reading.

3. What's your favorite movie/tv series?
SO HARD. I think my favourite movie is Mean Girls. I can watch that one over and over and over again. My favourite tv series is a lot harder. I'm really loving One Tree Hill. I'm on season 9 and I love these characters so much... I simply don't want it to end! My other pick would the The 100, just obsessed with that show.

4. Which was your favorite book when you were a child/teenager?
I'm 18, so I'm basically still a teenager. The 5 books I answered at question 1 still count for this one. My favourite books as a child were Dutch books.

5. Do you prefer e-books or "normal" ones?
Definitely e-books. I actually mostly don't like reading physical books. Reading on my laptop is way easier for me and I get so much more reading done, because I don't know on what exact page I am.

I'd love to do a mini-challenge, by the way!

message 48: by Emily (new)

Emily | 440 comments Hi Charlie! I really enjoyed both We Were Liars and Aristotle and Dante too.

♞ Pat Gent | 536 comments We're having a bit of a conversation in the All-Teams Endangered Chat.

What would you guys think about the four teams dividing up the time frame and putting together four mini-challenges for just our group?

Due to the hinky start and finish dates, there's not a 4 week block that encompases a single month, so what if we did a 3 week mini-challenge schedule with a week in between .... lagging the first start time until after WOBBLE is good and going?

Each endangered team would take one 3-week period and host a mini-challenge with just our sub-group.

Here's my thinking on the schedule : each one starts on a Sunday and runs 3 weeks, skipping a week until the next start.

June 26 - July 17
July 24 - August 14
August 28 - September 11
September 25 - October 16

You guys up for something like that? Let's do some deciding in the All Endangered Chat if you want to participate!

Melissa Hello! I'm Melissa and I live in Illinois, USA. This is my first big challenge with the group so I'm excited to see how I keep up. I love to read most anything. Currently I have been reading a lot of YA books but I'm pretty open to read most anything if it sounds good. I work in billing/registration in a medical office and when I'm not working you will find me reading, playing video games or hanging out with friends. I have a son that will be turning 20 this year and a great dog that keeps me company. I love watching movies and tv but usually never watch them when they are on air. I tend to do Netflix and chill but I include Hulu and Amazon in the mix as well. When it comes to keeping myself entertained I have no lack of hobbies to keep me busy. :)
