June Bethune
question
What does the story say about wealth?

I kind of read this story as an indictment against wealth, like we should all give up material possessions. There is a bit of that in the story, wealth being the root of the family's evils and giving up the wealth for some characters, specifically Jazz, June, Lucy, and Marcus, is a sign of peace like they are better people when they are poor. Is anyone else reading that?

I don't know about indictment. I do think there's a corrolation between wealth and some kind of unhappiness. Maybe that's what you mean, but I don't think it's painting wealth in a bad light but like "the things people do for money" in a bad light. if that makes sense
