John Mountford (KillMandela) | 735 comments This will be my next book purchase. It will be making waves among the 'Mandela Mafia' here in SA.

This book looks interesting! You'll have to let us know how it is! And the Book Fair looks like so much fun; one of my favorite parts of elementary school was Scholastic Book Fair day, when rows of new books were set up in the library and we were allowed to browse and buy whatever we wanted. Ah, heaven!

Did you go Carolien?

message 17: by Carolien (new)

Carolien (carolien_s) I did go to both. Lauren Beukes was great - about 100 odd people crammed into Love Books. I enjoy listening to her talk about her writing and research process. She's also very down to earth about life in general.

Zelda herself was interesting, but the questions and atmosphere a bit bland. They stuck her outside Skoobs due to the number of people attending so there was a lot of background noise and it was not as intimate as the conversation with Lauren. She did not start out to write a book, merely to document her life with him to remember for her own sake. It was only after she had finished it while he was ill last year that somebody saw it and suggested that it be turned into a book. I'll get around to reading it some time.

There was an interview with the bodyguard whose book is also out - Brand - yesterday at UJ, but the middle of the day was impossible for me. I'd have loved to have heard his version of events.

This one looks like fun on Heritage Day. We'll go around at some stage.

Carolien (carolien_s) The Jozi Book Fair programme is out:
http://jozibookfair.org.za/

I'm planning on attending Friday afternoon and Saturday from about 12:00 if anybody is going.

We'll also be at the Parkview one in the morning until about lunch.

Sounds great, for once I regret living in Cape Town.
Enjoy it!

Carolien (carolien_s) I can make you even more jealous. Here's Love Books schedule for the month (and they serve great Joostenburg wine):

Carla | 2 comments The Unspeakable New SA novel being releases on the 21st of September.
This novel bravely centres on the conflicts faced by a white male under apartheid, and refuses to let the unspeakable remain inarticulate. The subject matter is provocative, and I find it an unusual and brilliantly told story.

Carolien (carolien_s) I spent my week at our book fairs. Have to admit I ended up spending most of my time in the children's section at Parkview which was fun for them. It was well attended and they had some interesting panels (and the restaurants in the street did great business). Here's some photos courtesy of Ray Hartley.

Attended the Jozi Book Fair today. They had some fascinating panels, but the event needs some serious marketing. Stephen Grootes hosted a panel on the transition politics post-Marikana which was interesting. Justice Edwin Cameron held a workshop discussing the value of the constitution. There were probably 20 of us and he made it into a genuine discussion. Zakes Mda held 3 or 4 talks over the two days which covered a range of topics on his writing.

@John Mountford, I gave him your regards and he sends good wishes back in your direction.

I asked him if he would be willing to join us for the discussion on Ways of Dying and if we ask nicely, he may be willing to do a Q&A for us.
