Lady Of Quality, by Georgette Heyer

Miss Annis Wychwood, at twenty-nine, has long been on the shelf, but this bothers her not at all. She is rich and still beautiful and she enjoys living independently in Bath, except for the tiresome female cousin, who her very proper brother insists must live with her.

When Annis offers sanctuary to the very young runaway heiress Miss Lucilla Carleton, no one at all thinks this is a good idea. With the exception of Miss Carleton's overbearing guardian, Mr. Oliver Carleton, whose reputation as the rudest man in London precedes him. Outrageous as he is, the charming Annis ends up finding him absolutely irresistible.

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ and Karishma are on a roll. They plan another "buddy read" of one of Georg]ette Heyer's books - and they're giving a bit more notice. This time around it is Lady Of Quality. They welcome anyone who wants to join in the discussion. Not sure of a start day yet.

Elaine Thanks, Lisa Kay :D

Vicki (vickiguardianofthewraiths) I just ordered it on Amazon should be here by July 5. I don't read this genre much so it will be fun I'm in :-)

Miranda | 55 comments Thank you Lisa Kay!

I can't remember if this is one I've read or not. Isn't that terrible?!

message 12: by Miranda (new)

Miranda | 55 comments Karishma, you crack me up! I didn't read my first romance until I wa 17 or 18 and then it wasn't something as classy as GH. I cut my teeth on Kat Martin's Midnight Rider by Kat Martin ! Now THAT was an education! :)

message 13: by Elaine (new)

Elaine I'm looking forward to reading this one - I can't remember the story, although I know I've read it before

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 292 comments Hi Ladies!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and to those of us in the U.S.A., I wish you all a belated Happy Independence Day!

Is everyone ready to start? I can't believe that my schedule has settled a little and I was able to fit this into my Wobble challenge! So amid all the craziness and fun that's gone on with the challenge, I'll be able to start reading today! On time! Surprise!!!!

Looking forward to chatting with everyone about another Heyer couple! : )

message 16: by Miranda (new)

Miranda | 55 comments I should be able to start this evening. I read very little this weekend. 4th of July is a weekend where I am up all night with a neurotic dog and I sleep all day. So happy it's over!

I hear that! I agreed to dog sit for my son, so we had two neurotic dogs terrified of the big booms and shrieking whistles with sparkly lights. They did better with each other than they normally do alone, but it was still a looooong weekend. Next year it's doggy Xanax...

I can sympathize my little girl, Luna is crazy when she hears thunder and firecrackers glad it's over, too

Elaine I'm so into Johanna Lindsey's "Make Me Love You" that I'm starting Lady of Quality on Wednesday!

Hi Elaine!

Ohhh...you'll have to tell us about JH's book, too! I have a couple of her titles on my TBR, but I don't think I've had the chance to read her work just yet. Maybe you can give me a good excuse to change that? : )

Poor babies....it's so hard on them. Our dog was fine with thunder and storms until a particularly bad storm in 2012 brought an F1 through our neighborhood and did quite a bit of external damage. I think it was all the noise, the lightning, and being forced to stay in our safe spot for two hours. She hasn't been the same when it rains since then.

I love her new book! I think I'm on book 10, or thereabouts, of The Malory series which is beyond compare!

Sadly, my neighbors are jerks...more fireworks last night...maybe I can start today. :(

I'm unfamiliar with Johanna Lindsey...are her books period or modern?

message 24: by Elaine (new)

Elaine You definitely must start with the first Malory-Anderson Family series - Love Only Once. It blew me away!

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 292 comments Hey, Ladies! : )

I'm gathering my thoughts on this one. I ended up reading it all the way through today...I'm in challenge mode...and there were parts that I really enjoyed and other parts that were so different from the previous books that it didn't really grab me.

I think my initial impression was due to the narrator. Her character voices really turned me off. They were so annoying, even painful at times, especially when Maria was speaking. I think I'm going to read the ebook version in the evenings while so we can discuss things as they come up. I really liked Annis, but bless her heart....(view spoiler)

Thanks, Elaine! I'm going to add this to my TBR and check the library. : )

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 292 comments @Karishima...

I just read through the whole thread and saw your story about your teacher and asking what a "rake" was. LOL!!! I'm also glad it was a Georgette Heyer book you discovered, too!

I love hearing about the catalyst book for a specific genre or author, or books in general. It's always a different story and it's neat to see all the unique ways books affect our lives. : )

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 292 comments Hi Vicki!

My husband has been in 4...no, with the one in 2012 that would make 5 tornados in his life. He had to be evacuated out of his college apartment because an F5 caused so much damage to the building it was no longer safe. His apartment looked normal from the inside, but if you stepped out on the landing, one side of the building was completely gone. His apartment was on the second floor and he had been in the public shelter with everyone else. That was the Stillwater, OK tornado back in 1991 (I think that's the year).

It can be stressful living here in the springtime, especially if a person isn't prepared. We have a place to go for safety, but by next season we plan to have a shelter installed in the garage. It's just not sensible to live here without access to one anymore.

WOW you'll have been in some really bad ones. I've never been in any that bad. I'm glad I married my hubby and move to Middle/East TN. We get some bad thunderstorms but not to may tornadoes. It's the hills and mountains.

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 292 comments You live in beautiful country, too! I remember traveling through Tennessee on vacation when I was very little. It was gorgeous! We have some pretty places in Eastern Oklahoma and especially in the SE corner, near Beaver's Bend. There are lots of amazing horse trails here, too, with horse friendly campgrounds. So, I do enjoy living here, we just have to tolerate the storms a few weeks every year.

I've been blessed not to have excessive damage and I've never lost my home. I've had friends and fellow church members that have though and it's a tough thing to go through. The community is amazing, though. Everyone really pulls together and helps each other get back on their feet...tornado, fire, whatever the case may be, people rally together. That's something I've always been proud of having lived here all my life.

I would like to see more of the country one of these days, though! LOL! Scotland is my dream destination! I want to visit all the castles and ruins, etc. So much history there!

message 32: by Miranda (new)

Miranda | 55 comments Becky, Scotland is wonderful! It's not as green as Ireland but don't let the lack of color fool you. The people are wonderful and jolly and have great wit!

Nice read, but not one of my favourites. I do love Bath though - been there and its so lovely!

Could I suggest Sylvester for a future read. :o)

If I had a bucket list I would love to tour them all. My ancestors came from England an Ireland in early 1600 to Virginia. Then Scotland and Wales and the Isles and the Scandinavian counties and Germany. If I win the Lottery maybe. LOL

message 36: by Miranda (new)

Miranda | 55 comments I'm still in the beginning but I've already got my "I want to smack this person list".

Sylvester is a good one! I feel like These Old Shades is warranted after reading all the weird previous incarnations of characters in Black Moth. I've already read it this year but it would be nice to be able to discuss it with others for a change. It would also be nice to read something I don't read every year...

Miranda | 55 comments Yay! Another feisty couple. I just want to read Chap 5 over and over again!

message 38: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (vickiguardianofthewraiths) I'm starting it today.

message 39: by Miranda (new)

Miranda | 55 comments Finished! Becky you were so right about those surrounding Annis.

I think the thing I liked best about this novel is that it seems to be a return to the version of Heyer I like best. That is a well told story with her famous detail but without the extraneous prosing. The exception to this rule is of course, (view spoiler)

Annis is a woman beyond her time. This is evident from the first page. I believe she would have done much better in the 20 or 21 century than she does in her own. Heyer is completely brilliant as usual in composing a strong willed female lead! And she requires an equally, if not more, strongly willed hero. (view spoiler)

What about Lucilla and Ninian? First of all, what kind of name is Ninian?!?! Is it short for a more conventional name? Second, (view spoiler)

message 40: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (vickiguardianofthewraiths) I finally finished Lady of Quality/Charity Girl by Georgette Heyer
It was slow go for me at first because of the style of writing. So I stopped and picked it up again and once I got into it I liked it. My favorite character was Ninian he was such a drama queen.
I bought this book in a 2 stories to the book and I do want to read Chairity Girl so I did in the end like the style.
