I love Shane Schofield (Matt Reilly), Joe Pike (Robert Crais), Jack Reader (Lee Child), Eddie Chase and Nina Wilde (Andy McDermott), Jack Sigler and the Chess Team (Jeremy Robinson), Courty Gentry (Greaney), and I liked Lincoln Miller from SecondWorld by Robinson.

I like tough heroes who can handle themselves, but aren't too arrogant and into themselves. I like when they look out for other people and protect them from evil people.

I like Shane Scofield too

Mimi (heymimi) | 3 comments Ooh, Joe Pike is definately in my top 5 :)

Others I like are Bob Morane (series by Henri Vernes, really dated and corny, but loved them a s a kid) and Modesty Blaise (Peter O'Donnell) (a kind of female James Bond-esk spy/rogue)

Does Richard Sharpe (Bernard Cornwell) count as 'adventure'? He's pretty awesome too...

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Matt Helm, the American James Bond, is my favorite today. The 11th book The Menacers was just released in audio yesterday & is narrated by Stefan Rudnicki, one of my favorite narrators. The last previously published novel in the series is now available for preorder, so hopefully the final one which was never published will be available soon. Unfortunately, Hamilton's son Gordon is holding up the works while he does a movie deal. I sure hope it works out soon & they do a better job than the awful Dean Martin movies of the 60s.

I think I saw one of those movies, and it was pretty corny... Interesting to hear the books are better, the first one's going on my tbr :)

I hope you like Death of a Citizen. I reviewed it here:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The movie producers decided they couldn't compete with the James Bond budgets so went with some sort of whacky 'In Like Flint' comedy which they weren't meant for at all. Besides, Dean Martin couldn't pull off the act the way James Coburn could, not that his movies weren't cheesy back then & horribly dated now.

Anyway, the Matt Helm movies bear no resemblance to the books. If I had to make a comparison, I'd say they're a little more like a cross between James Bond & the Quarry books by Max Allan Collins.

Also, back in the '60s, these ludicrous spy movies were a whole genre onto themselves.
Loads of movies were churned out, because of the success of the 'Beach Blanket' movies, and the succes of James Bond.
The 'Dr. Goldfoot' movies are probably the most illustrative of this, and honestly, they make Austin Powers look PC...

KEVIN | 9 comments Joe Brannan (Stephen Cord), The Brannan series

message 11: by Ivan (new)

Ivan Zullo | 2 comments Dirk Pitt, by far. Because he's a larger-than-life character and you can always rely on.

message 12: by Leo (new)

Leo Goldin Reacher is the best, also Jonathan Quinn (Brett Battles), Victor (Tom Wood), Court Gentry (Mark Greaney)

Some of my favorites are Dirk Pitt (Clive Cussler), Gray Pierce and Monk Kokkalis (James Rollins), Alex Hunter (Greig Beck), Alex Coleman (Shane M. Brown), and Shane Schofield (Matthew Reilly).

If they put SF novels on the big screen Lou Diamond Philips as Crow ???

message 18: by Roger (new)

Roger Cave | 18 comments It would have to be either:
Dirk Pitt, just purely because of the types of adventures he's involved in.

Shane Schofield, this one is down to the books themselves. I mean who writes a 400 page book that's just one set piece after another.

Jack Reacher, the human tank, what more need I add?

message 19: by Igor (new)

Igor Ljubuncic (igorljubuncic) | 10 comments Tweed (Colin Forbes books). He's kind of an always-drunk mildly moldy queintessential British gentleman slash rogue without the James Bond bravado, sex appeal, megalomania or spy skills.

Igor

message 20: by John (new)

John Day Max Fortune would be my guy.
A laid back character who uses ingenuity not brawn to get out of trouble.
Max & Carla series, Criminal, Deep Secret & Fugitive.

message 21: by Chris (new)

Chris Williams | 5 comments Jack Reacher is my Favorite character because he is a Military Trained Special Forces drifter with a huge heart. But don't let the smooth taste fool you type of guy. A man of mystery who "can't not get involved." A reluctant hero who doesn't say much who has a Photographic Wrist Watch for a Brain.

message 22: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Williams | 2 comments I'm a big fan of Jack Reacher. The guy is a powerful force who knows how to take care of business. But in addition to his physical attributes he's highly intelligent. I also like all the little quirks that make up his personality. Great character!

Kronos Ananthsimha | 34 comments I love the character of Dewey Andreas. He's the main hero in the series written by Ben Coes. Dewey is an ex-Delta Force operator and is one of the deadliest characters in print today. He survives and saves the day at any cost. Yet he's a deeply complex character. The action and pacing of this series can be related to the Gray Man(Court Gentry) series written by Mark Greaney. Are there any Dewey fans here?

Curious that Amazonia is the only one of his books that Hollywood retained the movie rights for. Hmmm.....

Terry Dicken (tmterry) | 13 comments Just went back and read some of the posts in this discussion. Would like to revive this. I just finished Black Order and I have to agree Painter Crowe is one of my favorite characters along with others of the Sigma Force. I thought it was great that James Rollins inserted a shout out to another of my favorite characters, Cotton Malone of Steve Berry fame. I had just finished reading The Emperor's Tomb. I am working my way through both series at the moment.

Book 1: Press Gang!

KEVIN | 9 comments Joe Brannan is my favourite character. An alienated hero of questionable morality. Ideal for a modern pulp tale. Brannan's Run

message 39: by VinnieRM (new)

VinnieRM (arkangelblue) | 2 comments Hi everyone, new to the group.

My two favourite characters at the moment have to be, from Gregg Hurwitz Orphan X series, Ethan Smoake (aka Orphan X, The Nowhere Man), and Mark Greaney, The Gray Man series Court Gentry, (aka The Gray Man, Six).

Both are highly skilled black ops singletons that have many martial arts skill and trade craft. Both have a complicated relationship with the USA Government that employed them. They are also hunted due to going AWOL, and now using their skills to help good people in desperate need of help from bad people.

Love both authors books equally. But I wasn't that keen on the movie version of The Gray Man.

Thanks
