Maira Torres | 45 comments I loved this book. The first time I read it I was in 6th grade and it was on the Bluebonnet list. My teacher made us read books from that list for a grade. I loved this book so much that I read all the others in the series and watched all the movies. I was sad when the last book came out. I was also sad when I saw the last movie. The Harry Potter series takes me back to my teen years because that's when I first read it. I didn't know that the books were banned. As an adult I can see why issues would come up but I don't think they should be banned. I knew while I was reading that they were fiction.

One of the issues that people have is that some people believe that real witchcraft exists, and that all witches are evil. They fear that any books which have good witches or good magic—like the Harry Potter series—will lead people not to take the threat of real witchcraft seriously, and possibly lead them to take the Bible's teachings in general more lightly.

People that challenge that idea say that Harry Potter is a fantasy, not a true story, and claim that even children know the difference between the two. Whether or not there is such a thing as evil magic in real life, it has nothing at all to do with the made-up spells and potions found in the books. As an editorial in Christian Century put it, "...critics are right in thinking that fantasy writing is powerful and needs to be taken seriously. But we strongly doubt that it fosters an attachment to evil powers. Harry's world, in any case, is a moral one."

Diana | 34 comments I often wondered about Harry Potter books, I haven't made much effort to read one or about them. However, I enjoyed your point of view Maira, and just might reconsider reading one to understand why children like reading them.

I have never read any of the Harry Potter books, I guess it is because I always thought it dealt with witchcraft and stuff like that but I now know it is about the battle between good and evil. At least that is what my grandson says. He has all these books he tells me I have to read.

Also, as much as I hate to admit it, when I read or watch things that deal with witchcraft, demons, werewolfs, and vampires I have nightmares and I am not talking nightmares like children have I am talking major major ones, so I guess that is why I have avoided them so much.
