I think you've got to factor in the time period and Derek's background. Now it is reprehensible for bosses to sleep with their staff especially if pressure is put on the staff member to do so.. but back then and particularly in that type of business nobody would see it as wrong. Even in Society men (and women) were cheating after the heir and the spare were provided and as long as people were discreet nobody batted an eye. And as you said Derek was single.
