Diana Anhalt A Piece of Calm is Just That

Sally Stewart Mohney’s contemplative collection, A Piece of Calm, deals, on one hand, with the seemingly simple in everyday life: her father-in-law working on a puzzle, the passage of time, an observation of a sea shell. But on the other, it is capable of evoking strong emotions with a few words. Many highlight family relations and circumstances that leave their mark on our daily lives: natural disasters, leave-takings, death. Her poetry is stunningly visual, and descriptions of nature play a major role. But most particularly, it is her ability to provide insight into the past and communicate that sense of coming to peace with oneself’—of looking back over ones shoulder in a moment of calm— that makes this work so hauntingly beautiful.
