Thanks J.DGood luck with 'Behind the Badge'. I'm the same with publishing through Createspace. I'm planning on going through a proper printing company after I've finished the trilogy - hopefully next spring.
I recently attended a writers' conference. Two of the speakers in their seminars stated explicitly that pre-orders were a "must do" thing for all writers to do.I'm taking it under advisement.
Thanks for all the posts! After reading them, I think it sounds like a good idea. The hard part (for me) is patience for the lead time. :)

Great discussion. I was toying with the idea of a pre-order and you have made my mind up. Tomorrow I will put a preorder for my second book on Kindle. Although it will be out on the 1st..."
Good luck! I just put my third novel, Behind the Badge, up for pre-order a few days ago. It'll be out on June 1 as well; no hits yet, but maybe if I generate enough interest for release day itself, that'll make it worthwhile.
I think what bothers some is that, in my case, the pre-order's only for the Kindle version. I can't set up a pre-order for the paperback edition (which I self-publish through CreateSpace). So I think some people who would otherwise pre-order simply wait until release day.
