There is still one week to vote in the Long Read Classics Elimination poll. The poll will remain open through midnight on the 15th. The top-polled books (number indeterminate right now, will be roughly 10-ish, most likely) will go on to a second round of polling, to select the book we'll read in the 3rd quarter. Link to poll - https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...

The 3rd quarter book selection poll will be open during the same time window as the regular monthly polling for the Contemporary Classics, Old School Classics, and Revisit the Shelf sections. Polling window for our Monthly Group Read Book selections is from the 16th of the month, until midnight on the last day of the month).

-------

This month there will also be an additional poll to determine what publication date ranges the group would like to use for the Contemporary Classics Group Read Section.

Currently the Old School Classics Group Read section is anything prior to 1900, and the Contemporary Classics Group Read section is from 1900 to roughly 1980-ish (fuzzy end line).

There are currently two other Group Read sections in addition to the Old School Classics and the Contemporary Classics: Revisiting the Shelf, and Long Read Classics. Both of these sections can draw from books published in the date range for either the Old School, or the Contemporary, Classics sections.

There is already underway, a group discussion about what we would like the ending publication date to be for the Contemporary Classics Group Read section. To decide this, we will be launching a poll with some options to choose from at the same time the Monthly Group Polls launch.

If you haven't yet had a chance to add your input to the conversation about publication date ranges for the Contemporary Classics Group Read Section, please pop by the thread to add your input! Link - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

MK (wisny) | 2993 comments Update:

The monthly book selections polls are up, as well as the final round selection for the 3rd quarter long read. There are four book polls:

- Contemporary Classics
- Old School Classics
- Revisiting the Shelf
- Long Read Classic

As per the group's polling preferences for book polls polling results from last month, all book polls are open ballot, and link both the title and author.

In addition to the book polls, there is a fifth poll this month. This is a category preference poll, the results of which will be used to determine the group's preference for a publication date range for the Contemporary Classics section going forward.

Please cast your vote in all five polls this month! Here is a link to the polling page:

https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/4...

Individual polls are located at that link. A group Broadcast PM will be going out later, or tomorrow.

Also, in addition to voting for the book of your choice, feel free to discuss your choice. The discussion thread below the poll is a place where you can politic. There's no pork, no ear marks, no hand shaking, and no babies to kiss, you can just let people know why you like your choice. Who knows you may sway a vote or two your way.

The moderators would also like to take this opportunity to thank Lisa for volunteering to lead the June 2014 discussion for Crime and Punishment.

MK (wisny) | 2993 comments copy/paste of Reminder Broadcast PM, sent by MK 5/27/14:

subject - Please vote! :) - July 2014 book polls & more

Hi Group!

Just a reminder - still time to vote in July Book Polls! In addition to the three monthly book polls, the poll for the 3rd quarter Long Read, and a special opinion poll for what dates you'd like to use for publication dates for group read eligibility for the Contemporary Classics section.

If you haven't already cast your votes in the book publication dates preference poll, please stop by this link to cast your vote:

https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...

Eligibility date options:
published 1900-1999
published 1900-1980
published 1900-1990
published 1900-1960
published 1900-1970

There are also four book polls to vote in. The Old School Classics poll is turning into quite a horserace, so if you haven't voted there, please do so as well!

Old School Classics July Book poll - https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...

The remaining book polls still open are:

Contemporary Classics July Book poll - https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...
Revisit the Shelf July Book poll - https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...
3rd Quarter Long Read Classic Book poll - https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...

So, that's five polls to vote in! An opinion preference poll, and four book polls. Please pop in to vote, if you haven't already cast your ballots :). Polls will remain open through midnight of the last day of the month, as always (Saturday is the 31st).

----

May books are winding down, and June books are almost upon us. Some people have already begun reading. Up next for our group are:

contemporary classic - Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
old school classic - Crime and Punishment by by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
revisit the shelf - 1984 by George Orwell

Hunt through your bookshelves, visit your favorite bookstore, or request a hold at your local library and join us for one or more of the group reads.

And still underway is our first long read classic, War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. If you haven't yet begun reading, it's definitely not too late to join in!

Last, we implemented a new feature - the Volunteer Discussion Leader, and would like to extend a very big thankyou to Lisa L for being our first volunteer. Lisa will be leading the Crime & Punishment book discussion. Thankyou, Lisa !!! :)

Best to all, and happy reading!
- Cindy, Bob, and MK

MK (wisny) | 2993 comments Last few hours to vote, for anyone who hasn't yet, but still is interested:

Five polls - four for books, and one for opinion preference. Link: https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/4...

MK (wisny) | 2993 comments Polls are closed. Books we'll be reading in July 2014 are:

Contemporary Classic - The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck
Old School Classic - Emma, by Jane Austen
Revisiting the Shelf - The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde
3rd Quarter Long Read - Anna Karenina, by Leo Tolstoy

-------

Votes are in for the opinion poll as well. Results are not conclusive. No solid majority, or even persuasive plurality, exists for any of the choices. There will be a runoff poll between the top two vote getters, running through the month of June, closing at the same time as the next round of month book polls.

Opinion poll results:
published 1900-1999 71 votes, 34.3%
published 1900-1980 50 votes, 24.2%
published 1900-1990 39 votes, 18.8%
published 1900-1960 26 votes, 12.6%
published 1900-1970 21 votes, 10.1%
207 total votes

I will post the opinion poll results in the discussion thread for that topic, as well. (link)

I've wondered too! I've tried to catch it, to be certain, but I haven't yet.

I had thought it was Eastern US, but polls didn't end at midnight for me this month (I'm in the eastern us timezone).

If anyone knows, I'd love to know as well :D
