This is seeming like a no win situation with the gods and the Cesstrium. Meshkent is a sick puppy but apparently he is more necessary to keep around than Ran il Torna?
Yeah I am having such a hard time rooting for anyone because new stuff keeps coming up that completely changes what it will take for the world to survive. The only characters I actually like are Gwenna's wing and they seem to be out of the main fight for now.
I agree about the rooting - I love the Gwenna parts - and during them I really really like the book. The other parts are not too exciting to me right now. Well...I kind of like the Vaelyn parts.
I loved the training stuff in the first book, and I'm really enjoying the training of the rejects. But I'm a sucker for the magic school trope.
Gwenna's decision to force Jack's hand may come back to bite her though.
So far Vaelyn seems the least stupid od the three kids. Followed by Kaden and finally Adare. They seem less stupid than in the last book, but that's not saying much
The main reason I'm interested in Vaelyn's story atm, is because of the Flea. That and I'm curious about his periodic vision.
Despite my general dislike for the Emperor's kids, I am enjoying this so far. I agree about not having much to root for though.

I had a hard time with this section. I don't really like any of the characters. I even find Gwenna annoying, even though her sections are more interesting because there is some actual fighting. I find books where tension is created just because two people don't talk to each other or tell the truth (Kaden and Adare) frustrating and annoying. I find I don't have much desire to finish the book due to my general not giving a fuck what happens to anyone. The can all go to Shael for all I care :)But...I finally got a few chapters beyond this section and things are FINALLY picking up, so there may be some salvaging yet.
