J.S. Burke | 73 comments WELCOME TO MY BOOTH!

To join in the fun please join this group. New to Goodreads? Just click the BRAINS TO BOOKS CYBER CONVENTION 2016 Center. Then click on the Join Group button located under the big Convention Banner. To get back here, Click on THE FAIR GROUNDS and scroll down until you see my booth: Science Fantasy / Adventure with dragons and an undersea world.

Do you love science fantasy? Dragons, adventure, quests, friendship, the sea? Then sit down, lean back in a comfy chair, and spend some time with J.S. Burke and The Dragon Dreamer series.

I'M PLEASED TO MEET YOU!
Help yourself to some virtual coffee and funnel-cakes! Guaranteed to be calorie-free! Dragon rides are available, if the dragon likes you. My undersea shape-shifter, Scree, enjoys a good shark ride.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Hi! I'm J. S. Burke, author of The Dragon Dreamer series and other books. I live in Georgia and I'll be here, off and on, from 11 A.M. to 10 P.M. EST all three days.

I toss lightning bolts in storms with my dragons, and swim through coral reefs with my quirky undersea shape-shifters. I experience adventures, quests, towering tsunamis, fearsome legends, and the wisdom of Scree.

I've worked as an artist, chemist, writer, and as a marine biologist, studying creatures of the dark abyss and diving on coral reefs. The dangers my characters face are often ones that I experienced.

ABOUT THE BOOKS:
THE DRAGON DREAMER series is #YA #ScienceFiction #Fantasy adventure with dragons and an undersea world. It's layered for readers 9 to 99. Available in stores, amazon, and on e-book platforms.

The Dragon Dreamer by J.S. Burke A secret gift. An unlikely friendship. A dangerous quest.

Arak is bullied as a worthless dreamer. Determined to prove himself, he leaves on a quest, flies far over the sea . . . and crashes. Badly wounded, he faces death. A fearless, undersea shape-shifter named Scree finds and heals him, and an unexpected friendship begins.

Arak returns to the Winter Festival, where dragons carve glaciers with fire and toss lightning bolts in the clouds. But a devastating illness strikes the clan. Then an undersea volcano erupts! This triggers a towering tsunami and a deadly chain of events. Can Arak use his hidden talents to save the dragons?

"Black Lightning", the next book in my Dragon Dreamer series, is nearly finished. The ice dragons are not what they expected. I’ve also published five marine research papers, two "Crystal Books" (chemistry activity books with crystal kits), and an art/science activity/coloring book. Available on my website, in museum gift stores, and in catalogs.

ANGELA'S 2016 INTERVIEW:
QUESTION ONE ~
What story has recently inspired/moved you?

I recently re-read Watership Down. The characters are wonderfully different, and loveable. Hazel-rah is compelling as the unexpected leader. I’m drawn to characters who must overcome long odds to succeed, and I welcome them into my Dragon Dreamer series.

QUESTION TWO ~
Characters begin with their strengths and weaknesses. What are some of the strengths and weaknesses that you relate to, and how have these traits influenced your characters?

In The Dragon Dreamer, Arak and Scree are both misfits in their societies. Arak, my young dragon, is an insecure oddball with a secret gift. He's called a worthless dreamer, but he has the inner strength to consider new ideas and persevere against all odds.

Scree is an undersea shape-shifter. She’s fearless, ready to leap into anything despite the consequences. Her motto: “What will be, will be. And then I’ll fix it.” The strong friendship between Arak and Scree develops as they grow, and benefits both.

QUESTION THREE ~
What did story mean to you as a child?

We sang songs as a family when we drove together on long trips. Many were short stories set to music. One of my favorite songs was “Faraway Places with strange-sounding names, Faraway over the sea…” I wanted more stories, and found I could also travel in books. I loved to sit high in a tree, feeling the breeze, lost in a book.

LAST YEAR'S 2015 INTERVIEW:
1. Describe your favorite scene in your your book and tell us why its your favorite.

This is one of my favorites. The vivid colors of the coral reef return as dawn light reaches through the water. Scree, an undersea shape-shifter, is faced with a seemingly impossible problem. She stretches the worry out of her arms and says, "What will be, will be. And then I'll fix it."

2. Which of your characters do you relate to the most (or) who is your favorite character and why?

Arak, my dragon hero, and Scree, my undersea heroine, are equally favorites. Arak has a willingness to look beyond and see the possibilities. He's insecure and bullied but grows with the story, learning to use his unique abilities and how to make practical plans from dreams.

Scree is a fearless Healer who challenges convention whenever it conflicts with what should be done. She never gives up.

3. “Story” has always been the center of all human cultures. We need it. We seek it out. When we lack it, we invent it. What does “story” mean to you?

Lord of the Rings has great legends that add depth to the story. I write science fantasy to share stories that grow in my mind, with characters who speak to me. Dragons have ancient legends, are allied with an undersea world, and have a dangerous quest.

THANK YOU FOR VISITING!

Debbie (drpjoyce) | 9 comments I have recorded almost all of my sons' wrestling. My husband coaches wrestling to little children. I use to belly dance and snake charm at a theme park. Then I learned how to work behind the stage. Now I take care of my sister-in-law while we downsize to a small house by a lake. I also love and have rescue pets.

It's great to meet you! I love Scree! Life has obstacles, and I think it's worth the effort to make things work. :) I have several blog posts on my website with my "rules" for changing things, and how to create the illusion of power to change things. That's particularly fun!

My dragons grow the snowflakes, and I draw what they make. Valerie Hemlin loves to color, and she colored these.
