3. Discuss Merton's family life. Unstable and constantly in flux as it was, his father, grandparents, and aunt still seem to be the most important people in his life.

Jill A. | 640 comments So sad! His parents, especially his father, had no business having children. No stability, no sense of "home," no advance notice of major life changes, children in ignorance of major illnesses... I also can't understand why Thomas has virtually no relationship with his younger brother John Paul. They don't seem to console each other when their parents die, talk about their ideas or life paths or make any effort to be together.
