Don't 51-53 sound like they should be a trilogy? Hehe.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Regarding numbers 51–53, I guess number 54 would then have to be Mr. Darcy and Me and Baby Makes Three! Let’s just hope you don’t get far enough for Divorcing Mr. Darcy. :-)

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments 68. Just to Hear 'I Love You': An Alternate Tale of Jane Austen's 'Pride & Prejudice' - 3 stars
69. On Oakham Mount: A Pride & Prejudice Variation - 3 stars
70. Love Never Fails: A Pride & Prejudice Variation - 3 stars
71. Janet and Elizabeth (http://dwiggie.com/derby/old_2002/tam...) - 2.5 stars (Unpublished) - cute concept (Jane and Elizabeth are long-lost children of the Earl of Matlock) but the execution was super silly and unrealistic
72. Pride and Education (http://dwiggie.com/derby/katep1.htm) - 4 stars (Unpublished) - Early death of Mrs. Bennet, resulting in more refined girls...and also a twist of connections I didn't see coming. Very entertaining.

message 11: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 849 comments Hmmmm- Pride and Education sounds really, really interesting. I don't think I've come across a variation where the death of Mrs Bennet is the primary plot change. I think I'll have to check that one out.

message 12: by Eliza (new)

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments I've got several dozen stories bookmarked, so I didn't even remember the details going in, but it ended up being really good. The other twist has larger implications than Mrs. Bennet's death, but it's not revealed till quite a bit farther in.

message 13: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 849 comments Cool !

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments 73. An Inducement Into Matrimony (http://dwiggie.com/derby/old_2008/jen...) - 3 stars (Unpublished) - Diverges after Netherfield ball. Elizabeth assaulted by Wickham (trigger warning) and Darcy marries her to keep it secret. Pretty good, but sometimes Elizabeth and Darcy's disagreements seemed to be solved because they ignored transgressions out of unrequited (so far) love, and not because they'd actually worked it out.
74. The Truth (http://dwiggie.com/derby/sandrac.htm) - 4 stars (Unpublished) - 4 stars (Unpublished) - Diverges in Huntsford after proposal. Elizabeth and Darcy work things out largely through secretly exchanged letters, which is a trope I love. Darcy and Wickham's backstory is a bit different and more complex. BUT...my favorite thing about this story (surprisingly, to me) was the Colonel Fitzwilliam/Jane pairing.

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments 75. Overthrowing Such Schemes (https://web.archive.org/web/200708040...) - 4.5 stars (Unpublished) - Pre-Netherfield ball, where Darcy asks Elizabeth to marry him to help him conceal taking Georgiana's unborn child (Wickham's, naturally) as his own. This was very well written, and I liked how the depth of emotion involved was expressed. Not a lot of other complications (not even Wickham, Lady Catherine, etc.), but it was still a nice, quiet, feeling story.
76. Deception is Not My Abhorrence (http://meryton.com/aha/index.php?show...) - 2.5 stars (Unpublished) - More about Georgiana being sly and manipulating everyone (mostly Caroline) to help Darcy than about Darcy and Elizabeth's courtship. It was still decent fun until page 2 of the post, when it just draaagged with details on the courtship of every freakin' minor character.
77. Happenstance (http://abby2.mrsdarcy.com/) - 3 stars (Unpublished) - Forced marriage after Darcy and Elizabeth are seen in a supposed compromising position. At times it was overly introspective, and I think the length could have been trimmed down substantially without losing content. Darcy and Elizabeth both had their stupid moments, which was kind of frustrating. But overall, it was enjoyable. The build-up to their love and understanding was nice.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 849 comments Hmmm... Overthrowing Such Schemes has a similar-sounding storyline to Linda Wells' Imperative: A Tale of Pride and Prejudice, Volume 1. One of my all-time favorite opening scenes with Darcy intentionally compromising Elizabeth with a passionate kiss at Netherfield. *Deep sigh* I'll be curious to check out this one to see how well it compares!

I haven't read any Linda Wells yet, but that one is on my list. I didn't realize from the blurb what direction the story was taking, so I may have to move it up on the list a bit! :-) Though it sounds like it's a long one, so I may have to wait for a weekend when I don't have a lot of plans, heh.

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments 78. The Unexpected Entail (http://www.desertmusings.net/les/comp...) - 3 stars (Unpublished) - I'd written up notes on this one, but then forgot to save them. Now I don't remember, heh. Oops.
79. All I Do (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/oldf/jan...) - 3.5 stars (Unpublished short) - Widowed Elizabeth finds out that Darcy still loves her after 20 years. A bit melodramatic, but the emotional tone was nice.
80. Connections Redux (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/harveys1...) - 2.5 stars (Unpublished) - The basic story is decent enough, HOWEVER. The amount of wealth attributed to everyone is ridiculous, Elizabeth is a too perfect, the added characters are excessive, and the frequent (oh-so frequent) insertion of the original text into different context was sometimes like shoving an elephant-sized round peg into a mouse-sized square hole. Also, it was LONG. I probably could have gotten over the rest and enjoyed the crack if it hadn't been so bloody wordy.
81. Worse Fates Could Befall Us (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/julieh3.htm) - 4 stars (Unpublished novella) - Jane/Colonel Fitzwilliam forced marriage. For the length, it was a nice story, but it could have been so much better with more time for depth and character development.
82. Mr Darcy: The man with a plan (http://meryton.com/aha/index.php?show...) - 5 stars (Unpublished) - Darcy makes an open effort after Hunsford to win Elizabeth's favor. I loved how this story didn't rely on artificial angst to drive it, but rather rational approaches and sincere emotions. The variation on Bingley and Jane's story was interesting, too.

message 22: by Eliza (new)

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments 83. Darcy's Journey - 5 stars
84. An Engaging Friendship (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/old_2009...) - 4 stars (Unpublished) - Elizabeth and Darcy acquainted and friends before meeting again in Hertfordshire. I picked this one because it's got Jane/Colonel Fitzwilliam, but that part of the storyline was fine but not my fave. The best thing was the friends-to-lovers plot, and it was really well done--gradual and lovely. Bingley's storyline is very different from what I've ever read for him.
85. The Perfect Gentleman (http://meryton.com/aha/index.php?show...) - 4 stars (Unpublished)- Elizabeth and Darcy's families are both lower and/or have more attached scandal. This is essentially a romance novel with P&P characters attached, but it was an enjoyable one. Very different story, and even common characters have totally different roles.

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments 90. For Her Family (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/old_2005...) - 2.5 stars (Unpublished) - Elizabeth finds out her father is very sick just before Darcy's proposal at Huntsford and agrees to marry Darcy to protect her family. It started out well, but it ended up with very few divergences and, consequently, about 50% of the text was pulled from the original. I started skimming after awhile. Not bad, but disappointingly unoriginal.
91. What if it were different? (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3111720/...) - 2 stars (Unpublished) - Mr. Bennet dies and Elizabeth marries Darcy to protect her family. This story wasn't awful, but just shallow. All of the usual discussions happened (the truth about Wickham, Darcy's interference with Jane and Bingley, etc.), but I just didn't see evidence from their interactions that Elizabeth should have fallen in love with him.
92. The Power of Love (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/old_2004...) - 3.5 stars (Unpublished) - Caroline Bingley tries to force Darcy to marry her through starting a rumor. The Elizabeth and Darcy bits of this story were fairly inconsequential. She gets over her dislike pretty quickly; there's no mention at all of Wickham. The real story was essentially Fitzwilliam, Private Eye, wherein Colonel Fitzwilliam and Lord Matlock investigate the sources of the rumor and make everything better. Entertaining, but I would have liked a bigger dose of Elizabeth and Darcy.

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments 93. A Fine Joke - 5 stars
94. Darcy Changes Tactics (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/denver1.htm) - 5 stars (Unpublished) - After the Hunsford proposal, Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam assist Anne in leaving Rosings, giving mistaken impressions. Loved the extensive scenes with the Fitzwilliam family and didn't even mind them taking away from Darcy and Elizabeth's time. Loved Anne's insight into the Bennets. Loved the slight changes that led to the quicker resolution of the romance.
95. Happily Ever After (http://aaran-st-vines.nsns.fanficauth...) - 3 stars (Unpublished) - After the Hunsford proposal, a fever goes through London and Georgiana writes to Elizabeth in hopes that her forgiveness will give Darcy the strength to survive it. I liked this concept, and it was decent enough, but Darcy's recovery seemed unrealistic compared to the supposed threat of death, and Elizabeth came to love him really fast. Once she did, the two of them were super sappy, and every sentence had them using some appellation like "my love" or "dearest." Still, a sweet story if you can ignore that aspect.

message 29: by Eliza (new)

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments 96. The Bennet Son (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/old_2008...) - 3.5 stars (Unpublished) - The Bennets have a son and Georgiana comes with Darcy to Netherfield. I had to skim the first 1/3, because there was very little different from the original. It got more interesting after that, and I enjoyed it, but the addition of Jonathan Bennet honestly seemed to have very little effect on events, and while I liked him, I think the story could have been stronger. It wandered a bit sometimes.
97. When Duty Calls (http://belen.mrsdarcy.com/page5.html) - 4.5 stars (Unpublished) - I love a good ole compromise resulting in a forced marriage, and this one didn't disappoint. There weren't any particular surprises, and the main exterior conflict was the normal Lydia-and-Wickham stuff, but I still greatly enjoyed the ride.
98. Longbourn's Unexpected Matchmaker - 3 stars
99. A Rush of Blackbirds (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5768833/...) - 4.5 stars (Unpublished) - Darcy gets injured in Hertfordshire and thus delays the group's departure. I liked the portrayal of emotion in this story, and that it had a quick pace without feeling like it left too much out. I deducted half a star because much of the last couple of chapters only happened because Elizabeth was being kind of stupid.
100. Redemption (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8024099/...) - 4 stars (Unpublished) - Jane and Elizabeth are from Mr. Bennet's first marriage and have much higher connections than in the original. Man, this was a wild, cracky ride of a story. I had to shut off certain parts of my brain to not criticize and just sort of go with the flow, and it was fun. Very complicated, longer than was probably necessary, and CRAZY...but in a mostly fun way.
101. An Heir for Pemberley: A Pride and Prejudice Variation Short Story - 4 stars

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments Progress has been slow the last couple of months because of busy season at work, but I've got a few to add, at least. :-)

102. Officious Interference (http://meryton.com/aha/index.php?show...) - 3.5 stars (Unpublished) - The revelation at Hunsford about Darcy's interference with Jane and Bingley goes differently, and the proposal never happens. Darcy learns that Elizabeth dislikes him and sets about changing that. I enjoyed the first half of the story, with Darcy trying to win Elizabeth over. The second half sort of devolved with spiteful gossip and rumours and lies that seemed sort of out of the blue and detracted from what I thought was the intent of the story. But even though I skimmed a bit during those parts, I ultimately enjoyed the story.
103. At Your Service (http://dwiggie.com/derby/old_2006/gen...) - 3 stars (Unpublished) - Starts just after Darcy gives Elizabeth her letter. There's Typhoid quarantine at Rosings, a carriage accident, gypsies, kidnapping, amnesia...in short, it's a crazy, cracky story. Elizabeth fell in love with Darcy way too quickly, and all the ensuing action just tried to make up for it. Still, it was entertaining in an insane way.
104. Dearly Beloved (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/old_2003...) - 1 star (Unpublished) - Mrs. Bennet disowns Elizabeth because of believing that Elizabeth (view spoiler), and Elizabeth goes to live with the Darcys + Bingley, etc. This story was just a mess. I almost didn't keep reading, but I was too curious to ignore the train wreck. Elizabeth fell in love with Darcy super fast, and all of the conflict was related to either Mrs. Bennet or to random overdramatic nervous complaints Elizabeth had. Very little of it was believable. There were whole sections at the beginning unnecessarily repeated from the original book, and weird chunks of unnecessary details in the middle (view spoiler)
105. Second Impressions - 3 stars
106. The View From Where I Sit (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9406930/...) - 2.5 stars (Unpublished) - I would round this up to 3 stars, because it wasn't awful or anything, but it was just so...fluffy. The whole point was that Mrs. Bennet had more insight than expected and had an unexpected connection with Darcy, but she was just too insightful. Things went too smoothly and turned out too perfectly, but in a cheesy way, which kind of ruined it. Again, not awful, but meh.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 849 comments It was awful. The first time I read it was before I was either rating or writing reviews. When my book budget was overdrawn before KU was started, I regularly reread books. Unfortunately, I'm obsessive about finishing a book once I've started it, so I ended up reading the stupid thing multiple times!

message 40: by Eliza (new)

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments Ouch. There should be some sort of consolation prize for having to suffer through 1-star books more than once. (Did I mention THANK GOODNESS for KU?)

message 41: by Eliza (new)

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments A few more for my list!

107. Shyness and Sincerity (http://dwiggie.com/derby/old_2002/sof...) - 3 stars (Unpublished) - This story diverged all the way back at the first assembly, where Elizabeth doesn't immediately decide to dislike Darcy. She instead takes quite a liking to him, determining to draw him out of his shell and see what he's all about. The story wasn't bad, but there was a lot of repetition of the original for 2/3 of the story, and the rest had very little conflict for Elizabeth and Darcy. There was nothing awful here, but nothing revolutionary either.
108. Determination (http://meryton.com/aha/index.php?show...) - 3.5 stars (Unpublished) - This was largely a Jane/Colonel Fitzwilliam story, with only a side order of Elizabeth and Darcy. It diverges when Richard overhears and steps in during Darcy's proposal and then takes his cousin's vindication into his own hands. The courtship was nice, though it progressed a bit too quickly for my taste, and the conflict was very low. The last 1/3 of the story devolved into (view spoiler), which spoiled some of it for me. My favorite thing, though, was probably the confrontation between Richard and Wickham, which was very satisfying.
109. Restoring the Heir (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/old_2008...) - 2 stars (Unpublished) - The Bennets had a son that they thought died, but it turns out he was switched at birth and is actually Colonel Fitzwilliam. (I thought about spoiler tagging that, but you find out almost immediately, so.) I've read stories where Elizabeth is not a Bennet, but never where someone else is a Bennet, so the concept is interesting. Unfortunately, the writing and the story itself are pretty juvenile. Lots of telling, lots of unnecessary dialogue/repetition, all parties accept the new situation far too easily/conveniently, and the changes in Mrs. Bennet and Caroline are far too extreme and sudden to be even remotely believable. I skimmed a lot out of curiosity in seeing the train wreck, but meh.
110. Of Time Gone by (http://dwiggie.com/derby/old_2008/bek...) - 4.5 stars (Unpublished) - Darcy is deaf due to a childhood illness. SO good. I absolutely adored Darcy in this, and there were great appearances of all my favorite secondary characters. My only complaint (and reason for deducting .5 stars) is that it was waaaay too long. Some of the rehashing of the original could have been cut and it would have been better off.

message 42: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 849 comments You've been on an "unpublished" kick recently, apparently! With mixed reading experiences. I haven't read any of these except the last one. You're absolutely right about it being way too long, but it's an interesting premise.

message 43: by Eliza (new)

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments Haha, yes. Unpublished is the best way to ensure my book budget is sufficient for my reading needs. That and Kindle Unlimited, but I'm such a moody reader sometimes that I just go where the story sounds the best at the moment.

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments 111. All That This Entails (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/old_2009...) - 3.5 stars (Unpublished) - Mr. Bennet becomes a Duke after his estranged cousin and family die. Of the stories I've read where the Bennets (or just Elizabeth) come into money or gain status, this is one of the better ones. However, it was LOOOONG. Edit it down by 1/3 (mostly from the second half, which dragged) and it would have gotten another star. Also, some of the name references were annoying and hard to keep track of ("Mr. Bennet" became "His Grace," for instance, but sometimes he was called "Bennet").
112. The Fire at Netherfield Park: A Pride & Prejudice Variation - 4 stars
113. A Walk in Oakham Wood: A Pride and Prejudice Variation Novella - 3 stars
114. Caroline's Fate: A Pride and Prejudice Variation - 4 stars
115. The Many Lives of Fitzwilliam Darcy - 5 stars
116. Waking to Mr. Darcy: A Pride and Prejudice Novella - 4 stars

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments I find that I'm starting to run out of the stories I was most excited about. I'm sure there are other great ones I haven't read yet, but my inclinations aren't leading me to any stories in particular at the moment. It's gotten me rereading some stuff this weekend.

117. Secrets Kept (http://dwiggie.com/derby/old_2005/gab...) - 4.5 stars (Unpublished) - Elizabeth becomes a governess after Darcy fails to rescue Lydia. Set over a year later, and really deals more with leaving her job than the job itself, and more about said leaving than about Elizabeth and Darcy falling in love, because they're already in love at that point. There were some cracky things about this story, but I loved it anyway. There's almost a heist of sorts, which is fun.
118. A Remedy Against Sin: A Pride and Prejudice Variation - 5 stars
119. Complicated Attachments: A Pride and Prejudice Variation - 3 stars
120. The Journey - 3 stars (Re-read)
121. The Red Chrysanthemum - 4 stars (Re-read)

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments A few more to round out October. I read several I didn't care for, but at least they were balanced out by plenty I did enjoy.

122. Her Father's Choice: A Pride and Prejudice Novella - 4 stars
123. Paths of Men (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/old_2008...) - 4 stars (Unpublished) - I KNEW this story seemed familiar, but I was confused that I couldn't remember the exact plot. I couldn't stand it, though, and I did some digging (okay, a quick google search on the author...shhh). Turns out that this is the Jane/Bingley/Colonel Fitzwilliam side of An Engaging Friendship (http://www.dwiggie.com/derby/old_2009...). I think I preferred the Elizabeth/Darcy version, but that's mostly just my love for that couple. This story was still good.
124. Mansfield Park - 4 stars
125. Letters from Derbyshire (http://meryton.com/aha/index.php?show...) - 4 stars (Unpublished) - Elizabeth is not a Bennet, and Darcy helps her discover the truth about her birth parents. I don't usually care for stories where certain characters are highly OOC (in this case, Jane), but I went into this knowing that was the case, and I ultimately really enjoyed it. The mystery of Elizabeth's connections and all the related intrigue were insane at times, but also entertaining in a "train wreck" kind of way.
126. Great Misfortunes (http://austeninterlude.com/paula/gm.html) - 2.5 stars (Unpublished) - The first third of this story struck me as the less emotionally engaging cousin of The Last Man in the World and An Arranged Marriage: A Pride & Prejudice Alternate Path, but I had high hopes. It felt apart further after that, though. All of the poor treatment that Elizabeth received just felt like a ploy for reader sympathy, rather than a seamless story. There were abundant unnecessary sex scenes.
127. A New Beginning (http://meryton.com/aha/index.php?show...) - 3.5 stars (Unpublished) - Darcy ingratiates himself to Hertfordshire society early on but has a graver sense of duty. A couple of the plot elements felt forced or out of the blue, but overall it was still a good read.
128. A Lady's Reputation (http://meryton.com/aha/index.php?show...) - 4.5 stars (Unpublished) - News of Darcy's engagement to Elizabeth gets out before he has a chance to propose. Bingley takes the place of Wickham as the bad guy rake. Bingley's characterization made me sad, but it did work in context. I loved Lord Saye (hilarious in his gossip usage, and especially with Mrs. Bennet near the end), and Darcy and Elizabeth's romance progressed nicely and culminated perfectly. I liked that it didn't leave me hanging on angsty situations for too long.
129. His Choice of Wife (http://meryton.com/aha/index.php?show...) - 3 stars (Unpublished) - Elizabeth comes around to Darcy much sooner after Hunsford. It wasn't awful (had some rather nice moments - especially waltzing with the Darcy siblings), but it was too long, overly dramatic, and had what I felt was gratuitous premarital sex.
130. Becoming Elizabeth: A Pride and Prejudice Variation - 2 stars

Dropped by to see your numbers and wowsers you are killing it. Woohoo. Maybe hit 140 by the end. Amazing, Eliza! :)

Thanks! I'm aiming for 150. :-) I'm actually at 138 but just haven't updated here in a little while.

Ceri | 224 comments You're doing so well, Eliza. I am with you on the premarital sex. It can work in certain circumstances but often it just makes me feel Elizabeth has become Lydia which I don't like. One of the things I love about Elizabeth is her loyalty to her family, flawed as they are, and such behaviour is selfish in this period as it risks her whole family's reputation and possible future.

Thanks! I completely agree. I don't dislike the plot element because I'm being prudish, but because I can't imagine Elizabeth risking it, nor Darcy asking her to risk it.
