What did people make of the way the characters virginity was played with? I looked at the link to the analysis on "Gradesaver" that Inak linked to in The Snow Child discussion. They take everything at face value, such as the statement that his virginity provides the soldier strength and protection against shadows. They also offer a "technology versus superstition" interpretation of the story, based on Carter's statement that the bicycle is the embodiment of reason.

I have trouble buying into this. Carter's statements about virginity and the bicycle were so lacking in her usual subtlety that I saw them more as a parody of that kind of in-your-face symbolism.
