Nik Krasno I'm hesitating how good/bad these options for the Title are:

'Be First or Die', OR,
'Be First or Be Dead'

It's for a Southern Romance.

No, I'm only kidding, of course -:)
It's for a gritty, Tarantino-esque, hard-boiled thriller. Checked on Amazon. Nothing close.
What do you think? Are they too direct, westernish? Which one is better, if at all?
Would appreciate opinions. You can slam your fists, if you feel the titles deserve, no need to be tender

It just sounds bigger to me.

Quoleena Sbrocca (qjsbrocca) Be First or Die

Peggy (psramsey) | 33 comments I agree. "Be First or Be Dead." I'm a little jealous I didn't think of it first! :-)

Be First Or Be Dead

I like that better of the two myself, and it's close to the title of an Iron Maiden song.

Be First or Be Dead - that title would definitely make me pick up a book.

So far they make my choice rather obvious

It's a great title for any romance book not just a Southern... ; -P

Good luck with your thriller!

M.L. | 1122 comments Be first or be dead. It has a bit of dark humor to it, in the way of challenge, I.e., Kill Bill.

Ceanmohrlass Ceanmohrlass | 69 comments I would say Be First or Be Dead does it for me

message 16: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Quilter | 8 comments honestly I'd pick the book up with either title but I think be first or be dead had a better flow to it

message 17: by Joe (new)

Joe Jackson (shoelessauthor) "Be First or Be Dead" makes me think of the Iron Maiden song, "Be Quick or Be Dead." Not a bad thing, mind you.

message 18: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno Thanks a lot! Definitely encouraging comments here...

M.L., glad that you think it exudes a bit of dark humor. It should.

Riley, Joe, thanks for mentioning Iron Maiden's song. I wasn't aware, but it's a pretty cool band and thanks to you I just watched the clip -:). Good song and actually the lyrics are pretty close to book's essence. Does this association, in your opinion, have any negative connotation?

message 19: by Joe (new)

Joe Jackson (shoelessauthor) Heh, I didn't even see Riley's comment before I posted mine.

I wouldn't think there's any negative connotations to it. At worst, you might attract a bunch of Maiden fans to read your book!

Yep. I vote for what they all said!

message 21: by Michael (new)

Michael Cairns (michaelcairns) | 3 comments Hi Nik
I think Be First or Be Dead has a better flow. Also, I think it might look more natural on a cover than the other idea.
No negative connotations with the Maiden song - Great band, great song, and a good message as well.

Cynthia Yoder | 24 comments Hey, why not "Be First or Dead" I think that could be even more dark, pithy and catchy!

message 23: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Yoder | 24 comments Or:

Come First or Dead

message 24: by Rex (new)

Rex Grainger how's "the first one to die"??

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Be First or Be Dead, it sounds more catchy, but the other one has more energy. I prefer Be First or Be Dead, because it flows better when I say it aloud. 'Die' trails with a vowel, so it ends 'weaker,' in my opinion.

Real Thriller Story!!

message 29: by Kat (new)

Kat I also vote for Be First or Be Dead *raises hand*

message 30: by A.M.H. (new)

A.M.H. Johnson (amhjohnson) | 9 comments Be First or Be Dead definitely has a better ring to it than Be First or Die. Probably has something to do with the paralleling of the word Be. It's working as emphasis, like you'd experience with alliteration.
