Miss M | 101 comments Ruth,
I've only read Acts..., plus Unseen Things Above both of which are her most recent I think. Those two are sort of a 'birds eye view' of life in the extended cathedral community, very gossipy, very funny, a third-person narrator who speaks directly to the reader. Sort of a much-updated (and much more worldly) Anthony Trollope. You could maybe download a kindle sample?
But I'm not sure what Close Quarters is?

I think Close Quarters was your next suggestion by a different author - I meant to delete that bit of the quote but forgot.

Thanks for the suggestion - I think I'll go for the sample first as I'm a bit concerned about the 'language' - I know it sounds prudish but I'm always put off by bad language :-(

Miss M | 101 comments Eh, we all have our 'things' we don't like to read. I guess there is a fair amount of 'language'....did a quick search: 26 bl***y, 3 b****r, emmm...close to 100 on the f-word!
I really didn't notice--very lightly done, lots of dialogue/banter, but might not be for you.

Ruth | 350 comments I recently signed up to a site called ereaderiq which lets you know if books on your wish list or by certain authors drop in price on Amazon Kindle.

I got an email this morning to say that books in Kate Charles's Book of Psalms series were reduced to £1.99 - so I've bought the ones that I'm missing and I'm set to read the whole series!

That looks a great site, Ruth. I have joined and imported my Amazon wishlist.

Lady Clementina ffinch-ffarowmore | 1237 comments I quite like the Father Brown books- and have also read two Brother Cadfaels which were quite good too.

Betsy | 170 comments I am a big fan of Brother Cadfael, having read all twenty of the books. I am less so of the Father Brown stories after an endless read of one of the huge volumes. Not enough mystery and too much political/religious discussion. I did like the tv series though.

Rebecca Libersat (bibliobeque) | 16 comments I'm about due for a reread of all of Brother Cadfael. Love that series!

I also really liked the Dame Frevisse serIes by Margaret Frazer, following a 15th century English nun with family connections to the court of King Henry VI. The first few were a collaboration between Gail Frazer and Mary Monica Pulver, and they're pretty good, but I personally prefer the later ones that Frazer wrote on her own after Pulver dropped out.
