So I've finished this section of the book.
I'm glad they've explained why the people are human. I imagine that the author goes into more detail about that in the other books in the series.
I'm not sure where this book is going. The story seems to be rather slow paced. It reminds me a bit of 'Stranger in a Strange Land', but better. I find that Shevek is a lot more sympathetic than Mike (from Stranger).
The countries on Urras seem to be pretty much identical (culturally) to the US and USSR. I wish that was a bit more subtle.
Is anyone else reading this?
