Awe. I really want to read this one, but unfortunately I can't leave a review on amazon due to having to purchase something first.

You don't have to make a purchase on Amazon to leave a review Amber unless you have NEVER bought anything, ever, at Amazon. The reason for that rule is they're trying to weed out Fiverr review fraud (when an author PAYS somebody to leave a bunch of fake reviews).
If you haven't purchased anything ever, I think downloading a free book counts too.Edited to add: checked their terms, and I'm wrong. A free digital download doesn't count.

I have never purchased anything, but I have downloaded plenty of free books and I get this thing saying that in order to leave a review, that I need to be charged for a purchase and that free ebooks and promotions do not count

It's true, unless you have bought something - anything that cost money - through your account, you can never leave a review. I have a lot of free ebooks on my Kindle Cloud Reader, but I can't leave Amazon reviews. :(
