I recommend two novels about Scottish history.
Waverley, by Sir Walter Scott
First published in 1814.
This book is set in 1745, at the time of the Jacobite rebellion. It tells the story of Edward Waverley, a young English soldier who ends up fighting on the side of the rebellious Highlanders. There are a lot of details about the Highland clans and they way they live. There are also great landscape descriptions and historical informations.
Kidnapped, by Robert Louis Stevenson.
First published in 1886.
This book is set in 1746, right after the failed Jacobite upraising. Young Lowlander David Balfour is betrayed by his uncle and gets kidnapped. After a while on the sea, he is shipwrecked in the Scottish Highlands. The difficult condition of the Highlanders after the rebellion is depicted through David's friend, Allan. There are also a number of landscape descriptions and historical details.

Author: Eoin Colfer
Age Group: YA and up
Published: Traditionally.
Description: Conor Broekhart was born to fly.
This is the tagline and I wonder if adding any more would be a spoiler. This was a gripping tale from the very first page. Couldn't put it down. Fans of historical fiction, and even those who aren't, will enjoy this. Colfer's style, as ever, is captivating.
