Worth noting that The Ship Who Sang was originally 4 or 5 stories published separately (in zines maybe?), which McCaffrey edited and pulled together into the novel. I believe eventually there was a series, with more novels, but they were not all written by her and don't feature the same characters.
Also.....some scholars/critics feel that you can see the development of her writing in this novel, as sentences and writing style get better throughout. Not sure about that, but I'm going to look for it. McCaffrey herself called it "the best story I ever wrote" and one that still made her cry. She chose it to read aloud as Guest of Honor at the annual science fiction convention Eurocon 2007.
Now I'm really excited to read it! I'll have to look for the style changes, too. I've always meant to read more of her work, as I've only read her first Pern novel (though I vividly remember my mom going through all of them), so this'll be a good place to start.
This month's books are:
Sci-fi: The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey
Fantasy: American Born Chinese by Gene Leun Yang.
I hope to see you there!
