Neph (nephatron) I read this book in approximately the mid-90s in Australia. It's a "coming of age" story set in America, told in the first person perspective by a teenage boy. The narrator's brother is fostered/adopted from an Native American community and is struggling with his cultural identity. A recurring motif is running at night, which may be reflected in the title.
Other fragments I recall: both boys are good runners, and repeated reference to a poem which runs something like "he ran on the wind, with the stars in his hair".
