message 6: by amber (new)

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 371 comments Petra When Harry Met Sally is a movie I've intended to see for years and still haven't gotten to.

Alannah I found R&J boring, but there are a number of good ones on the list.

Alannah Clarke (alannahclarke) | 11470 comments Mod
I think we watched the film in school because we were studying it at the end of the school year and I left early to go on holiday.

Yes, amber, "What is a Youth" is my all-time favorite song - I made a song video of it to put on my Youtube channel!

message 15: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I've seen:
1. Ghost
2. The Princess Bride
3. Singing in the Rain
4. William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
5. West Side Story
6. It's A Wonderful Life
7. Gone With the Wind
8. Harold and Maude

message 16: by amber (new)

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 371 comments Leslie- that is a very impressive total!

Alice- I have that soundtrack on a record I got at a library discard sale years ago but have never listened to it because I don't have a record player.

Everyone who hasn't seen the Before movies yet I really strongly recommend them!

message 17: by Everyman (new)

Everyman amber wrote: "http://flavorwire.com/438134/the-50-m..."

A whopping five. I was surprised, though, that Love Story wasn't on the list.

Princess Bride
Casablanca
It's a Wonderful Life
West Side Story
Doctor Zhivago

message 18: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I've seen fifteen of them. I was surprised that there were quite a few I didn't know!

message 19: by Scott (new)

Scott 22 of them!

message 20: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) 17 for me: (Chris is into Romcoms more than I am...)

Ghost
When Harry Met Sally
My Beautiful Laundrette
Notorious
Singin' in the Rain
Bonnie and Clyde
It Happened One Night (apparently, though I don't remember it)
Doctor Zhivago
His Girl Friday
West Side Story
It's a Wonderful Life (best film ever!!)
Breakfast at Tiffany's (the cat is the best bit)
Gone with the Wind
Roxanne
The Apartment
Harold and Maude
Casablanca

It's in reverse order!! The final three are all 5★ I reckon... And "Singin' in the Rain" too :)

And yes, what happened to the film of Erich Segal's Love Story? We thought it was very good when we saw it at the pictures - even though it was panned at the time by the critics.

message 21: by amber (new)

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 371 comments Everyman and Jean- I can't speak to Love Story because all I've seen of that one is the clip of it shown in the movie Now & Then. I was surprised that Sleepless in Seattle wasn't on the list.

Jean- If you like the more dramatic side of romance try Ali: Fear Eats the Soul it's really good.

message 22: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) amber - I agree - that's another surprising omission! And thank you for the recommendation. Neither I nor my local library(!) had heard of Ali: Fear Eats the Soul. Googling it though I agree it looks excellent (Fassbinder) with superficial similarities to Harold and Maude but far more...angst?

message 23: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2016 comments Being of a certain generation Love Story was definitely one of the most important romantic films for me when I was growing up in that it described a situation I could imagine being in.

My top picks from the list
Dr Zhivago,
West Side Story,
Casablanca
and Gone with the Wind.
Are the most memorable ones for me in this list although I have seen about 15 over the years.

.. They are Surely wonderful wonderful movies but so far from any kind of personal experience that the romantic dream seemed unattainable.

Another couple not on this list but which would perhaps make mine are
Doctor at Sea and
Anne of the Thousand Days.
And where is Truly Madly Deeply ? That deserves a place of honour in my book....

message 24: by JudiAnne (last edited Jun 26, 2014 07:10PM) (new)

JudiAnne (judipatooti) I've seen 25:

The Notebook
Ghost
Jerry Maguire
When Harry Met Sally
Notorious
An Affair to Remember
Singin’ in the Rain
Bonnie and Clyde
Out of Sight
Romeo and Juliet
It Happened One night
Dr. Zhivago
West Side Story
It’s a Wonderful Life
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
All That Heaven Allows
The Last of the Mohicans
Gone With Wind
Roxanne
Lost in Translation
The Apartment
Brokeback Mountain
Casablanca
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Princess Bride

My favorites are:

The Notebook
When Harry Met Sally
Notorious
An Affair to Remember
Bonnie and Clyde
Romeo and Juliet- I saw all of them but loved the Di Caprio one best.
It Happened One night
Dr. Zhivago
Gone With Wind
Brokeback Mountain
Casablanca

Like Leslie, I too am a sucker for a good love story. BTW, why isn't Pretty Woman listed? It's one of my top 5!

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 371 comments Grr I hate when GR drops one of my notifications.

I'm so sorry Jean I just saw your post from the end of May when I looked at the notices for the ones from the last couple days. I know you're offline at the moment, but in answer to your post. Yes Ali is really a wonderful film, very sad at times, but wonderful and not creepy like a number of Fassbinder films are.
As for Sleepless maybe they thought having the movie that inspired it (An Affair to Remember) on the list was enough.

Esther (eshchory) | 1291 comments I have completely watched 29 of them at least once. Several of the others I got half way through and gave up.
