M.G. King (mgking) | 727 comments I'm attending a writer's workshop with Gary Schmidt this weekend, so I've been reading through a few of his works.

I just finished Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy. This story is based on a true story about an island community in Maine, in the early 1900s. Lyrical language, rich setting details, and complex characters.

Megan | 48 comments I loved Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy. It was not at all what I expected. I enjoyed the weather in it especially! Amongst other things. I also enjoyed The Wednesday Wars. I have a young student reading it at the moment who, after having taken it home the day before, raced into the classroom the next day saying, 'I think I might be reading one of the best books ever!' I am about to read Okay for Now, which I am looking forward to. Very envious of you writers workshopping with him...

Lizzie Bright sounds very good. I'll have to read it.

Best book I read in April was our group read, Wonder.

I think Okay for Now is my favorite Schmidt book, although I don't really like the title or the cover.

Carolien (carolien_s) I've just completed Tom's Midnight Garden and really enjoyed it. I understand why it is rated as such a classic children's book.

I went a little crazy in April and read: Ivy and Bean, The Spindlers, The Thirteenth Princess.
I think the Ivy and Bean series are great, especially for kids just moving into chapter books (not sure this is quite middle grade). However my favorite was The Spindlers. Excellent characters and very imaginative.

Lea Ann (buntingla) I read Someone Named Eva and We Fought Back Teen Resisters of the Holocaust with my reading class. On my own I read Serafina's Promise. I enjoyed all of these books, but I'd have to say my favorite was Someone Named Eva simply because this Holocaust survival book had a really different plot and raised a lot of interesting questions. It was a good one to sink my teeth into in class. lol
