Good grief. An ambitious person could probably fill almost every category of this challenge with a science fiction book if they set their minds to it.

Migh read the second book in the Starbound trilogy, the third book for The 100 series or start the Across The Universe series. I have plenty of science fiction in my TBR list to choose from as well.

Terrifying and fascinating all at the same time.

Just about any book by this marvelous author who make a good sci-fi read. Clarke is considered a dean of sci-fi.

Frank Herbert
Frank Herbert's series with the Dune theme are a cross of invented mythology and science fiction at its best. Do not judge the books by the movie. Dune is too complex to do it justice in a movie. Frank's son has continued the theme with 4-5 books to his credit but I do not think they are as good.

The Lord of the Rings is fantasy, not at all sci-fi.

I'm a complete sci-fi nerd. Over half the books I read are SF, so I had to think twice to realize that it isn't an obvious favorite genre for most.

If you want suggestions, let me know. There are plenty of different SF. Let me know what you like in general and I can hopefully give you a good suggestion.

But yeah, LotR/Tolkien isn't SF. Not at all. At least that's a start.

Right now I'm reading Blindsight. It's pretty claustrophobic and dark. I'm also reading Leviathan Wakes. That's more swashbuckling adventure. Both are very good.

I am currently reading 'Ready player one' by Ernest Cline for this category. Really enjoying it so far, and excited to see if I manage to take all the references for the 80's. I am not a gamer, but I would definitely love to try OASIS if we had something like that. The authors love for the 80's is really showing through in the book.

I read Brittle Hill for this task. It is a comic series about a trio of teens and candy-zombies, written and illustrated by a former co-worker and her husband.
