Did you know that 35,000 people enter giveaways every day on Goodreads?!

message 3153: by mark (new)

Wow! This place gets a lot of traffic!

I only entered once and won a book. I haven't bothered since. I enjoyed the book and got to chat to the author which was nice.

I won a fair number, but then I won two and failed to review them so I went on the shitlist. To win, you must review.

I'm totally on the shitlist. I do keep meaning to read that book, though! It just lost all appeal once it was in my hands.

The ones I failed to review I did want to read, and still do, but they're both on America's healthcare system and after the first couple chapters I was so depressed I had to stop or I was going to jump out a window.

message 3159: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) and now they are no longer relevant! except maybe as supporting evidence.

I'm sure it will work flawlessly and be such a complete improvement to the old button that we will wonder how we ever lived without it.

Do you ever join a group hoping for some adult conversation and then find out 99% of the group is, like, 13?

message 3177: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I don't join many groups.

message 3180: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
No. Lg just joined two groups and was wondering if it was a good idea. One had a surplus of exclamation points, if I recall correctly.

Because people in TC so rarely talk about books, I am always looking for groups that do. And not YA books. It's hard to find groups where people talk about books that are not YA books, speaking in full sentences without emoticons. Even in one of the groups I just joined, they all seem to have this yearning to read children's books. Why? What lacunae in your life are addressed by reading the Narnia chronicles?

message 3184: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Sorry LG, I either have time to read the books, or talk about the books, not both.

Lg, I'd like to find a group that discusses adult, non-fiction or classics. Any suggestions?

Reading the Classics
http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/5...
The History Book Club
www.goodreads.com/group/show/8115-the...
Constant Reader
http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/8...

Are some larger ones. There are lots of smaller ones; the risk with a smaller group is that people will lose interest and wander away and there's no one there to read or converse with. This one is just getting started:

Classics and Literature Book Club
http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/7...

Go to Groups and browse by tag, see if anything interests you. Or befriend, or follow, or just look at, members who have really long or interesting reading lists and see what groups they're a member of.

I become worried in groups when people are posting (usually in all caps) at 3 a.m.

message 3190: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I do enjoy the 1001 Books to Read Before You Die group. I mostly use it to hear of classics I should have read before now.

message 3191: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) i used to be an active member of that group. it led me to a quite a few good books.
