Născute - la propriu - din lutul ȋn care ȋși ȋngroapă temelia, casele Deltei sunt natura sublimată ȋn forme, materie curată zidită pentru a-și putea adăposti creatorul. Culorile vii ȋn care sunt pictate și micile virtuozități tehnice decorative ȋmi par măsura nevoii de a extrage din omogenitatea naturii aceste accidente fericite și revelatoare, de a demarca vizual și estetic teritoriul omului de cel al stihiilor. Modestia extremă a alcătuirilor, lipsa de emfază si absența totală a oricărei retorici găunoase dau arhitecturii vernaculare a Deltei Dunării un aer spiritual pe care foarte rar ȋl mai poți regăsi ȋn ziua de azi. Declar, fără nicio ezitare (și fără nicio pudoare, ați putea spune), casa Deltei ca fiind igloo-ul nostru național. Nu știu alta zonă a țării ȋn care casele sa fie mai evident concrescute din solul ȋnsuși, ȋn care bătrânețea să le apropie mai mult de lutul care le ȋnconjoară și trecerea lor ȋn neființă sa fie mai discretă și să afecteze mai puțin natura ce le-a născut.

Born, literally, out of the same clay into which they sink their foundations, the houses in the Delta are nature refined into forms, pure matter built to house their creator. The lively colours they are painted in and their small decorative technical innovations seem to reflect the need to extract these happy and revealing accidents from the homogeneity of nature, to demarcate, visually and aesthetically, the territory of man from that of the elements. The extreme modesty of composition, the
lack of ostentation and total absence of any flawed rhetoric afford the vernacular architecture of the Danube Delta a spiritual air you find only very rarely today. Without hesitation (and without any hint of shame, you might say) I declare the Delta house to be our national igloo. I know of no other area where the houses are more clearly an extension of the earth itself, where old age brings them closer to the clay that surrounds them and their passing away is more discreet and has less of an effect on the nature which gave birth to them.
