Blight (wolfcreed) | 132 comments I'm looking for a Christmas picture book I read in the 90s, a picture book the size of a typical Golden Book / Circle book, of Rudolph.

It was certainly NOT the stop motion cartoon Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer!

It had good art, and Rudolph (not sure about the other deer) was more anthropomorphic than usual, he slept in a human bed, wrote a letter, etc. The cover was blue, featured him pulling Santa's sleigh, had a distinctive harness from the other deer.

Lots of possibilities here - http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=kw%3...+

Blight (wolfcreed) | 132 comments Thanks, I'll check out that database!

Sadly so far it's mostly books based on the stop motion film.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5009 comments Wolfrott, do you remember the plot of the story? Was Rudolph part of the reindeer team at the beginning of the story? Or, was the story about Rudolph becoming one of Santa's reindeer?

Were there any other characters in the story, like Mrs. Claus, the elves, etc?

Blight (wolfcreed) | 132 comments Good questions!

Rudolph was the butt of jokes, kept getting teased. I don't recall any elves bu mrs Claus wasn't there.

Adele | 1220 comments This is a possibility: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer by Robert Lewis May

It doesn't have the pictures from the cartoon and using the Look Inside feature on Amazon you can see Rudolph sleeps in a bed: http://www.amazon.com/Rudolph-Red-Nos...

message 7: by Adele (new)

Adele | 1220 comments I should mention Goodreads only has editions of the Robert May book published in the 2000s, but there were editions published in the 90's. Here is one: http://www.amazon.com/Rudolph-Red-Nos...

message 8: by Adele (new)

Adele | 1220 comments This one published in 1985 matches your cover description better: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rudolph-The-R...

message 9: by Adele (new)

Adele | 1220 comments Actually, I suspect this is the version you had: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RUDOLPH-THE-R...

Blight (wolfcreed) | 132 comments Darn, it's none of these :(

I also remember now that Rudolph was drawn as a younger buck, unlike the older reindeer.

Take a look at the inside pics too.

Rainbowheart | 19042 comments Cover not a match, but inside pics show Rudolph indoors, in a toy box, etc....

Blight (wolfcreed) | 132 comments None of those, however the art for Rudolph Shines Again looks very familiar! I'll have to find more interior art!

Rudolph had a christmas stocking on the end of his bed, the pictures were pretty detailed and had backgrounds like his whole bedroom; he wrote a letter to maybe Santa, or God, asking for help to be treated better, or it was a wishlist.

Um, Ruldolph'a sleigh harness had a straight bar across his chest, not a strap, and the text in the book was decent like in that Shines Again, it wasn't 'see jane run'.

Rainbowheart | 19042 comments Just saw your edit. Damn, well, I'll keep looking.

Rudolph writing a letter to Santa, or God. Maybe a religious book? I'll do some more investigation to see what I can find. There's gotta be more books about Rudolph out there. Maybe we can find a pic of that bedroom.

Darn! We were so close! But he definitely had the distinctive bar/rod across his chest!

It's frustrating because there are SO many Rudolph books! I feel bad for asking for help but it was one of my fave books as a child :(

Rainbowheart | 19042 comments No prob! We'll see what we can find. :)

This has a blue cover and is from the '90s, but it doesn't look right. Inside it's kind of like a Where's Waldo type of thing.....

Couldn't find inside pics. Think this is from England. What country did you read the book in?

message 23: by Blight (last edited Dec 12, 2015 11:54PM) (new)

Blight (wolfcreed) | 132 comments None of those, but has similar art to my book like that Shines Again link I copied from you!

Bold outlines, animated cel-style, more dull colours though! it wasn't really photorealisfic fur shading like a Scott Gustafson painting.

Also bears a striking resemblance to my book but it isnt it because Rudolph's harness is wrong. What really struck me about my book, besides him writing a letter and sleeping in a human bed, was that bar on his harness.

I read it in Australia in the late 90s :)

Rest of it doesn't look right though. Illustrator is Diana Magnuson.

Australia, huh? I bet it's from there, or England. I'll look more for foreign versions.

message 25: by Blight (new)

Blight (wolfcreed) | 132 comments Nope :( wrong again. I'll keep looking! I shan't give up :D

Yeah! I'll try aussie ebay, etsy is giving me the same three books repeatedly.

message 26: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 19042 comments I'll keep looking too!

This has a blue cover, but you probably would have remembered the pop-up aspect....

message 27: by Blight (new)

Blight (wolfcreed) | 132 comments Thats not it, but we may be close!

Aussie ebay again gave me the 70s book and the Rankin Bass ones. Shoot.

I'll ask my twin sis if she can remember anything I may have forgotten about the book.

message 28: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 19042 comments Did your twin sister remember anything?

I did another search just now, but nothing new came up.

message 29: by Adele (new)

Adele | 1220 comments There's another edition of the Eileen Daly Rudolph book. This has a blue cover and Rudolph seems to have a straight red strap across his chest below the bells: http://www.amazon.com/Rudolph-Red-Nos... The cover art does not seem to match the style you said was close though.

message 30: by Blight (new)

Blight (wolfcreed) | 132 comments My twin doesn't remember anything extra :(

That new edition you added isn't it.

message 31: by Laina (new)

Laina (lshockley) | 189 comments I have this 1985 reprint of the 1976 edition at home:
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer by Barbara Shook Hazen
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

My apologies if it's already been considered, I didn't follow all the links in the posts! It does have a blue cover, but no beds or letter writing. This one is Barbara Shook Hazen and Richard Scarry as the illustrator.

Sorry, not it! I had explained in my earlier posts it's definitely not the 70s/80s stop motion Rudolph that is so popular :)

Photos of an edition. Looks like Rudolph at a desk on one image.

message 42: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 19042 comments Are you sure it was Rudolph and not a knock-off? I found Noni The Christmas Reindeer. Lots of pics available online. Doesn't really seem to match, even though one of the covers is blue with a distinctive harness. Thought I'd bump this to the top anyhow.

message 43: by Blight (new)

Blight (wolfcreed) | 132 comments Sorry, that's not it; I found pics of the cover & interior art, my book was cartoony & well-drawn.

message 49: by Angela (new)

Angela | 598 comments Has the original 1939 Montgomery Ward edition been ruled out yet? That's the version I have at home, and there are definitely images of Rudolph sleeping in a bed, as seen here. I seem to remember the other reindeer sleeping in beds too, as Rudolph looks in the window when he flies by pulling Santa's sleigh. I don't remember if there's a picture of Rudolph writing a letter, but I can check when I get home in about an hour or so.

message 50: by Angela (new)

Angela | 598 comments Sorry for double posting, but I did a little more searching and found that Rudolph does indeed write a letter in the original Montgomery Ward edition! Here's a (tiny...) picture I found: Click
