David (david1960) | 2 comments A ordinary man (maybe in New York City?) with a family starts receiving checks in the mail. He tries to return them. He can't. He decides to deposit them. They clear, he never hears anything about it. He leads a normal life. He continues to receive the checks (not a great sum, not tiny) every month. He deposits them. This goes on for years. One day, in a crowd, a stranger comes up to him and says "you are activated". The man discovers he is now a small cog in some larger agency. Never read book, only review, I believe in the old school New York Times Book Review.

Money for Nothing by Donald E. Westlake seems to match your description.

You're welcome! That's an interesting plotline.
