Sci-fi short story ~3800 words

Hi,

I'm working on an anthology of short stories related to an invasion of earth by a race of creatures from Europa. Its going to consist of roughly 15 stories chronicling the fall of humanity and the dirty, deceitful and destructive way they rebuild and try to defend themselves while being trapped by a field of gamma radiation encircling the planet.

This first story is about a soldier, trapped alone in a outpost while a partially terraformed landscape around fills with all manner of creatures.

I really could use a beta to give me a little feedback on the feel of this first story as it is the cornerstone of my first venture into science fiction/fantasy.
