FROM FICTION TO REALITY
Duration: January 1 - December 31, 2016

Challenge post

We thought it'd be cool to learn more about the people, places, or time period in the fictional books we read! This challenge lets your fictional reading inspire you to read nonfiction books or vice versa.

You'll read books in pairs. Read any fiction book. Then, read a nonfiction book about any part of that fictional work. Or read a nonfiction book, then find a fictional work that's related to it.

I want to read 5 pairs (10 books)

Pairs: 0/5
Books: 0/10

Pair 1.

I SPY: BOOK TITLES EDITION
Duration: January 1 - December 31, 2016

Challenge Post

Read a book that contains in its title a word that can be found in each of the classic book titles. The word needs to be there in its entirety; however, homographs (words that are spelled the same but mean different things) and words within words count. Articles (a, and, the) and any two letter words do not count. For examples, see below:

Allowed
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (the "wind" here means something different than the "wind" in Gone with the Wind but is spelled the same way)
The Princess Bride ("prince" from The Little Prince can be found here in its entirety)

Not Allowed
Cat and Mouse ("mouse" is a variation of "mice" from Of Mice and Men but "mice" is not in the title)
Think and Grow Rich (the word to match is "grows" from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but only the first four letters "grow" are here)
Insurgent (it contains "in" from A Wrinkle in Time, but "in" is a two letter word so it does not count)

I want to do all 25

Books: 3/25

Here are the 25 books:
1. Of Mice and Men -
2. A Tale of Two Cities - Bravo Two Zero by Andy McNab (1/26/2016)
3. Gone with the Wind -
4. A Wrinkle in Time -
5. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn -
6. The Little Prince -
7. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass -
8. Brave New World -

11. The Diary of a Young Girl - The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente (3/24/2016)
12. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings -
13. The Book Thief -
14. The God of Small Things - The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss (3/2/2016)

16. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time -

LET'S TURN PAGES CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1 – December 31, 2016

Challenge Post

This challenge is back by popular demand this year! We are always making goals about how many books we want to read in a year. How about we make a goal for number of pages we want to read?

1. Make a goal of number of pages you would like to read.
2. Read as many pages as you can in one year.
3. Since you probably don’t know what you want to read for the entire year, make your list as you go. (Be sure to post the number of pages in your book!)

If your edition doesn't have page numbers (such as an audiobook), use the most popular edition of the book (that's not an audiobook) to determine what the number of pages should be. Rereads will count for this challenge, but you have to read the entire book…no skimming!

Goal: 50.000 pages

Read: 2.717/50.000

1. Witches Abroad: - 286 pages (1/2/2016)
2. The Walking Dead, Vol. 12: Life Among Them - 144 pages (1/7/2016)
3. The Walking Dead, Vol. 13: Too Far Gone - 136 pages (1/9/2016)
4. Winter's Heart - 780 pages (1/11/2016)
5. Star Wars Trilogy - 688 pages (1/15/2016)
6. Onderweg met Roadie - 208 pages (1/17/2016)
7. Het Messias Mysterie - 475 pages (1/19/2016)
8. Shadow Puppets - 384 pages

Box Set Challenge
Duration: January 1, - March 31, 2016

Challenge Post

For one of our 1st Quarter Challenge, we want to give you all the power. We would like to see you build your own box set.

Many of us already own some famous series box sets like the Harry Potter Series and The Lord of the Rings set, and then there are the classic box sets from authors like Jane Austen and Jules Verne. Book stores often offer sets revolving around a genre like romance or mysteries, but how would you make your box set? You can do set up your box set with any theme you like, such as "Colors of the Rainbow," "Women of the 19th Century," or even, "Books I'm Reading because I Should Have Read Them in High School." It really is up to whatever you desire as long as you have 3 or more books in it!

For this challenge, chose the number of books you would like to read, and how many box sets you would like to make. You must name each box set, and each set should have a theme, but you are not limited to what you see suggested.
Please be creative!

I want to make 3 boxes with 20 books (TBD)

Fantastic Fantasy
1. Witches Abroad - Terry Pratchett (1/3/2016)
2. Winter's Heart - Robert Jordan (1/11/2016)

Starry Science Fiction
1. Star Wars Trilogy - George Lucas (1/15/2016)
2. Shadow Puppets - Orson Scott Card

January Challenge

MARATHON CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1 - January 31, 2016

Let's start the New Year off running! How many of us have a New Year's Resolution to read more books? How many of us set goals higher that we did last year? How many of us want to read that super long Penguin Classic that has been sitting on our book shelf, or spend long winter days on the couch with a pile of graphic novels? Let's start this New Year with a marathon of reading!

With long school breaks and snow days coming, pick a pile of books you feel you could snuggle up with. A nice long over 500 page book, a group of books under 100 pages, that book that has been on your TBR waiting to be read all day, or anything else you choose for yourself.

This is not a sprint, but a way to spend January in the pages! Pick the number of pages or books you would like to read in January and post them below. The goal is to get the New Year started fast! Who would have thought, with the snow coming, that you could do a marathon in January?

I want to read 10 books and 5,000 pages

January Challenge

EXTREMES CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1 - January 31, 2016

Challenge Post

Books: 2/8

So January’s theme is extremes, here are some topics to explore:

1. The Weather can get pretty extreme in January...either really cold in the Northern Hemisphere or really hot in the Southern Hemisphere. Read a book that has an extreme weather event or a book that takes place during a hot hot summer or cold cold winter.
Winter's Heart by Robert Jordan (1/11/2016)
How it fits: after a long intense summer, the Aes Sedai and Windfinders used the Bowl of Winds to change the weather. Now there are blizzards and freezing cold winds, even in summer.

2. There are some extreme environments, and people love to explore them. Read a book about someone surviving in the wild outdoors or a book where someone travels to an extreme location (like outer space).
The Walking Dead, Vol. 12: Life Among Them by Robert Kirkman (1/7/2016)
How it fits: After a deadly virus spread through the world, Rick Grimes and his son Carl are trying to survive in the zombie-infested fields and forests of America.

3. Extreme sports have become very popular over the years, so much so that some are in the Olympics! Read a book about an Olympic athlete or someone who went to extremes to play the sport they love.

4. Going with the sports theme, there is not sport more extreme and possibly dangerous than Martial Arts if not practiced correctly. Read a book about someone who participates in Martial Arts, or about someone who ends up in a very dangerous position.

5. Unfortunately, even with modern day science, extreme mental illness still disables millions. Read a book about someone who suffers from an extreme mental illness like bipolar or schizophrenia, or a book about a tragedy caused by someone with an extreme mental illness like suicide or mass shooter.

6. The media is dominated by news of those who practice extreme versions of their religions, if you could even call it following a religion. Read a book about a cult, or read a book about someone who is (was) a religious extremist.

7. Nationalism is often a good thing even if it’s extreme, just ask the founding fathers of a nation, but it can also lead to some serious conflicts like WWI. Read a book about the founding of a nation, or read a book about how extreme nationalism destroyed a nation.

8. Mathematics often talks about reaching extremes, but only the truly dedicated to the practice ever get to understand why math has such extremes. Read a book about a mathematician or read a book about a dedicated intellectual.

Your Reading History! Re-read Your Favorites
Duration: February 1, 2016 - February 29, 2016

Challenge Post

With this month's theme being History, we thought a great monthly challenge would be for us to look at our own book histories.
Revisit books you've been meaning to re-read, whether they are old friends or comfort reads, books you've read too long ago to fully recall, or titles you want to revisit now that you're older or in a different place in life. Perhaps one of you want to read an earlier books in a series you need to reread to refresh your mind for the next installment.

To participate in this challenge, pick the number of books you would like to re-read, and let us know how many.
We can't wait for you to catch up with these old friends.
